could it be reflux?

So right now I BF and then supplement with formula. LO is going to be three weeks on Mon. For the past week she has vomited her feeding maybe a handful of times. Since I BF her first I thought the vomiting might be due to eating too much since I don't really know how much she is getting at the breast before I feed her a 2oz bottle. She also gets hiccups at least a few times a day and she grunts and squirms a lot. It seems like she is uncomfortable but she's just so laid back that she just gruts and squirms instead of crying. At night she sounds kinda congested and she coughs randomly throughout the day.

She has her next doctor appointment next Monday and I plan to ask about it. I was wondering if any other babies have these same symptoms and have been diagnosed with reflux?

Re: could it be reflux?

  • Definitely ask your pedi if you are concerned, but I'd say probably not.  Reflux is all day, every day.  All those symptoms are normal for babies in general, they are just more extreme when it is reflux.

  • My little one grunts ALL day long especially at night. She's also wheezing and just making loud noises. I was worried too but apparently it's totally normal according to my pediatrician and the ENT specialist we had to see for a different issue. There is a condition called laryngomalacia which affects a lot of newborns and kind of goes away by age 2 - not dangerous. My Zoe has a mild case of that which contributes to the grunting. One way to know if that's what she has, is to lay her on your chest or her tummy for a bit and see if the noises continue. Zoe's don't when she's on my chest. Either way though if you're concerned definitely talk to your doctor about it.

  • We've been going through this too. It's hard to watch them like that, but everything seems to say this is normal newborn behavior. Kellymom has great info about this. My pediatrician calls it being a happy spitter. Meaning all babies spit up and as long as they're gaining weight it's ok.

  • Obviously recommend talking to your doc, but Our pedi said hiccups are very normal, our LO gets them ~3 times a day and also sounds a little raspy. Her lungs are clear - just happy baby noises. As far as grunting and squirming, I think that's typical baby behavior unless it's in excess.
