Hypnobirthing: Nuts or Necessary?

So...I live in Seattle, city of granola natural birth warrior women. I am SO not granola, & at this point am planning an epidural for delivery, but I've been hearing a lot about a hypnobirthing center close to where I live that has great reviews. I love the idea of a calm and peaceful labor (which they advertise) and being in a good, stress-free place mentally/emotionally. It all sounds great, right?

Maybe too good to be true...So I'm wondering if any of you have had experience with hypnobirthing and what you thought- waste of money or lifesaver?

Re: Hypnobirthing: Nuts or Necessary?

  • I don't think its necessary or nuts.

I did 5 med free births with just going with the flow. I had a safe word for my husband if I needed something, and I stayed home as long as possible to be more relaxed.

  • Anyone actually done it?
  • My doula for DS used hypnobirthing - her birth video is AMAZING.  I'm not sure if it would have worked as well for me since I had a posterior baby, but I definitely think it can work very well for some women.

  • Correction, she did hypnobabies - there's probably a difference!

This is a video of her giving birth to her DD, it's not graphic at all as she's in a tub.  Skip forward to 22 minutes - if you blink you practically miss it!

  • I think there are some discussions about this on the natural birth board and several ladies say they loved it.

    Wow..... Just wow.

  • I had some of they hypnobabies lessons or whatever they're called on my ipod with my first and for a couple weeks I practiced with them, and I can see how they could be helpful.  They really did put me into a super relaxed, almost, hypnotized state.  I'd be fully conscious one minute and then 20 minutes later they'd be counting and I'd wake right up.  It was kind of weird really!  I got bored of doing it every night and didn't follow through with completing all the lessons and doing the practice, so I didn't end up using it all during labor.  I don't know how much it would have helped with my lengthy induction of a posterior baby, but I think it's worth a try if you're interested in a med-free birth and commit to doing the class or doing all the lessons.

Hi Megan, would you mind sharing the app you used?  I noticed there are a whole bunch of them, but since they all cost money I would hate to choose one I don't like.  Thank you!

I didn't have an app, I think I found them online and downloaded (illegally) the cd's as torrents.  Sorry, may not be that helpful!

  • I used hypnobirthing with mine. I ended in an emergency c-section but was in active labor with a posterior baby for 47 hours before that (6 hours at 9 cms). It worked really well for me and I didn't think it was painful.

BUT - I think it works for me. I don't think it would work for everyone. I use visualization for bad headaches already so I knew how to do it. I am very in my head for things and I can convince myself something doesn't hurt. I think it will be very personal whether or not it works for you.
  • Wow I cried soo amazing

I used Hypnobabies. I think the biggest thing I liked about it was the daily affirmations about pregnancy and birthing being normal and healthy. I feel like we live in a society very fearful about birth, so it was empowering for me to be able to change my mindset.

I had a very peaceful night in labor, but was still only a 5 the next morning. I agreed to let my MW break my water, and once that happened, I went from 5 cm to delivered in about an hour...which is really fast. The hypnobabies was great until the last 15 min. At that point, I dropped a few f-bombs and asked for an epidural, but it was time to push.

So...did it help for the most part? Yes. During transition and pushing? Eh...all bets were off at that point. Some people insist they had a pain free birth with hypnobirthing/hypnobabies. I wouldn't plan on hypnosis guaranteeing a pain-free birth, but I do think it improves the overall experience.

If I had a place that actually did classes and walked me through it, I would definitely give it a try. I just had the HB CDs, so I spent the first couple of weeks wondering if I was even doing it right. I would be curious to learn from someone who knew what they were doing.
Haha! I'm laughing about the last 15 min part. I'm so with you on the F-bomb dropping! Thanks for sharing your experience. After reading & doing some more research online, we're planning on taking a 6-week class starting in January. Excited!
  • One of my closest friends did Hypnobabies, and hers is the ONLY good natural birthing story I have heard (I don't know why people feel the need to tell me their labor horror stories, not helpful).  She said it was more of a mindset that you shouldn't expect birth to be painful, more of a positive way of looking at labor.  She had a really positive experience and highly recommends it (and i plan/hope to do it as well).
