Hot beverages?

Anyone else off of coffee and tea? Where it's fall and chilly here in NE I am trying to find alternate hot beverages. So far pasturized apple cider is the only one I can find and im not really digging the sweetness. Any other ideas? I'm doing zero caffeine.

Re: Hot beverages?

  • Certain herbal teas should be ok.

  • Hot chocolate? I still enjoy my cup of coffee every morning though :)

  • Oh I didn't think about hot cocoa. And yup, my only allowed caffeine is via chocolate ;)

Does anyone know if chamomile is ok? I'm always afraid on herbals!
  • I've read red raspberry leaf tea is really good for pregnancy. There's a good article that lists teas on americanpregnancy.org. I know nothing about that site in general, but the tea info seems legit. Red raspberry tea is recommended for ladies with endometriosis like myself, so, I could see it being ok for pregnancy. You can also call your doctor if you're really wondering about something :-)

  • Tea! I'm all over tea... I still have pretty bad nausea all day long, so tea is what's keeping my going. Herbal teas are caffeine-free, you just need to be cautious about what herbs are in them (some aren't great for pregnancy). My current favourite is Tetley's Mojito tea - yum! Chamomile, peppermint, ginger, lemongrass, fruit flavours like peach or lemon, decaf chai or earl grey, rooibos are all fine, and I'm sure there's a lot more :)

  • I've been drinking hot water and honey in the evening hours when my m/s is at its worst. It sounds rather plain but it soothes my stomach.

  • This is a really boring drink, but I LOVE hot water with lemon. It's my go to hot beverage during pregnancy. :)

Just in case.... My doc had me stop a prenatal that had red raspberry leaf in it because there isn't enough research about it but is supposed to "tone" the uterus which some people believe can cause contractions, preterm labor and possibly miscarriage early on. It could be complete crap but I decided not to take any chances because my research was too all over the place. Some said its great others avoid until 36 weeks. I think another poster said her doc said the same thing. Can any holistic mamas out there comment?

ETA: I asked for holistic mamas because my research said its used later in pregnancy to prepare the uterus for delivery. Maybe some of you have used it.

  • I just get a decaf version of my old favorites if I'm craving something. I also drink one cup of regular coffee in the morning but I understand wanting to cut caffeine.

  • Is there a list of herbal teas that are okay? I bought a Bigelow brand that said "no caffeine," but I did not really think about the herbal aspect...

  • My doctor said I could drink tea pretty much all day and still never reach the daily caffeine limit. (Which she said was the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee.) I used to have tea with every meal. I'm trying to keep it to two cups per week now.

  • I still drink tea occasionally.  I'm mostly drinking chai lattes (I found the k-cups -- they're yummy), which are fairly low in caffeine and only 60 calories.

I also enjoy the odd hot chocolate.  If I could find good apple cider, I'd drink it in a heartbeat.

  • Yes thank you all. Some really great options here that I'll certainly try! Knew I could count on you ladies for some great ideas!
  • I started drinking my own ginger tea. Cut some ginger up and boil it. Add some honey and enjoy. Also boil water add lemon juice and a bit of honey and a yummy hot lemon before bed.

  • I don't know if you have stephen's hot chocolate where you live (west side here) but it is my favorite!! They have so many great flavors, my favorites are mint and raspberry but white chocolate is good too! I love the pumpkin steamers from kneaders and I know Starbucks probably has them too. Starbucks hot chocolate they have a great peppermint, pumpkin and raspberry! They also have a great apple cider. I get the alpine apple cider packets from the store, my husband loves them and they feel good on a sore throat too! I am a big fan of wassail my mom makes the best around these fall holidays :) hope those give you some ideas!
  • I tried peppermint tea today, it was actually really good! I was an avid coffee drinker and not having a hot drink in the morning is challenging! I think I might stick with peppermint tea.
  • White hot chocolate is the best!

  • If you have a Keurig, I really love the Naturals brand apple cider. I don't find it to be too too sweet!

My brother is a doctor and told me to stay away from chamomile because it can cause premature contractions. Not sure if it matters this early but easy enough to avoid. I'm currently obsessed with chi spiced vanilla tea with a slash of milk and stevia...yummy!
  • A lady I know used to dissolve a few red hots into her apple cider to make it spiced, and it was delicious! Maybe that's something you could do with the "too sweet" apple cider. Also, I love mint tea!

  • I had peppermint hot chocolate last week with tiny peppermint bits in it. It was amazing. Polar express brand! So good.
  • Seriously I can't thank you all enough. Looks like I'll need to hit the market as soon as the inlaws leave. I'm excited to get some variety!

Also, love hearing others research. I do lots of it too so it's great to know you're all doing the same. My DH makes me feel crazy obsessive sometimes...
  • Republic of Tea makes a herbal apple cider tea. You get all the yummy apple flavor and warmth but none of the sweetness. Unless you add a touch of honey. Mmmmmm..... It sounds weird, but you can heat up pineapple juice and apple cider vinegar. It's great for digestion. I cut mine with water and sip it in the evenings.
