Reflux moms--Prevacid

If you give your LO Prevacid Solutabs, how do you admister it--using dropper, syringe, or do you let it dissolve in the baby's mouth?  Both of my kids have had reflux and both have been on Prevacid.  I never had problems giving it to DD when she was a baby.  I just put her in her swing, and gave it to her via dropper or syringe mixed with a little bit of water.  But I'm having issues giving it to DS.  He just seems to spit it out a lot.  Some days I can get it all in him but there are days when he spits it out or it comes out later when he spits up after eating. I can always tell when he doesn't get all of his medicine because his reflux flares up badly.  So I know the meds are helping.  Tips, experiences?  Also, what time do you give the med?  I give it to him first thing in the morning.  Is there a better time to give it?

  • Us too, we have liquid and I just squish it into his mouth then pop in the passy. It's not the best tasting stuff but he keeps it down
  • Loading the player...
  • We use the liquid compound also and usually do it with a syringe when DS is awake, but if he is asleep for the night time dose, I mix it with like 10 ML of formula and have him drink it first (so we know it is all taken) and then go straight to his normal bottle at that time right after.
  • I tried to administer DD's every which way and finally just started letting them dissolve in her mouth while I hold it inside her cheek. That's the best way I've found!

Maybe ask you pedi for the liquid version? Our pedi had us get the liquid, it just had to be prepared at a compounding pharmacy. It is strawberry flavored and just administered through a syringe and he actually likes it since it probably tastes like candy :). Might make it easier for you in that form. We also give it first thing in the morning on his empty stomach since that makes it work best.

We have the liquid strawberry version as well. Our local Target pharmacy had it, so it was easy.

We were on the solutabs for the first 2 months though and I would just disolve the tab in a few drops  of breastmilk in a baby bottle nipple. I would put the nipple in his mouth and  down the meds and milk would go.

  • We used to give it straight to him and let dissolve in his mouth but after a few times he started pushing it out or gagging on it. Then we mixed in a bottle or just dissolved in a little water via syringe but noticed that in both instances about 50% was left on the bottle or syringe. Now what works for us is simply (gently) shove it into the back of a cheek and pop his bottle in for a feeding. Works like a charm and he gets it all.
