Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Finger foods

DS is 9 months and I have been feeding him jarred baby food. I'd like to move to finger foods, but feel a little bamboozled by the whole idea! I have given him a couple things, but not much because he doesn't have a pincher grasp yet and he doesn't attempt to put the food in his mouth. He also doesn't 'chew' yet. He just swallows, which makes me nervous that he'll choke. I understand that at first it's exploration and he may gag, but are there any suggestions for starting off? Should I keep feeding puréed food and give him solids to explore and play with? I feel like he needs practice to master the pincher grasp, so maybe I should just let him 'play' at first?! I don't really know!

Re: Finger foods

  • DS started self-feeding table foods around 6.5 months, because he started refusing the spoon then.  We loosely follow BLW guidelines, so we started with soft foods cut in long strips or wedges.  DS did not have a pincer grasp then, but he could grasp the food with his palm, and still have enough of the food sticking out of his hand to gum on.  Babies do not need teeth to chew; their gums are strong.  As long as the foods are soft, they can gum it and swallow.  Also, there is a BIG difference between gagging and choking.  DS gagged a lot when we first started him on solids, but he never choked.

I'd recommend starting with strips of avocado, banana (1" long, halved lengthwise), peach slices etc.  overcooked carrots and broccoli are also good foods to start with.

  • Agree with everything PP said. Babies don't need a pincer grasp or teeth to eat table food. My LO is almost 10 months and has been eating what we eat since 6 months old. And she doesn't have a single tooth yet!
  • Diced avocado is my ds's favorite but diced bananas were also a big hit.  He also loved peeled and quartered grapes but those were time consuming and made me a little nervous (1 month later he eats them halved but with skins no problems but he has 7 teeth now).  As everyone else said pretty much any soft food works- sweet potato, green beans (overcooked), carrots, etc.  Our current favorite is potato with kale and leeks...I'm super lucky he eats everything :)
