Lansinoh Gel Soothies for BFing Pain

I am sensitive to Lanolin and I was having a rough time of getting started with BFing. I'll spare you the gory details and just say that my bits were wrecked. I was willing to try anything when the breast milk and coconut oil were not reliving the tenderness. The nurses brought me some Gel Soothies which are a glycerin pad that stick on like a patch. They made it so much easier to keep on schedule with feedings when I was ready to just hand or pump express and cup feed.

I highly recommend these if you are having tenderness, chapping, blistering, collapsed nipples or all of the above.

  • These things are worth every penny. I would put them in the freezer for a little before putting them on!

  • I will have to try these.  My nips feel like they are on fire, but I really want to keep going with the breastfeeding.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I feel like I'm missing something. These feel awesome for maybe 5 minutes, but when they warm up they seem pretty useless and have to be peeled off my tender nips (which are already missing the top layer of skin). So...am I using these wrong somehow, or just mistakenly expecting them to provide more than 5 minutes of relief?
When I take them off, I peel it down slowly and flat against my skin, lay a warm compress on each breast, feed DD, pump a little and stick them back on. My main issue was the friction of anything touching my nipple and I get relief by having the constant moisture without any rubbing.

If it is the coolness that is giving you the most relief, have you tried using the gel rings or putting one of your baby's cold teethers in your bra? I saw a recommendation for a DIY gel cool pack made with a ziplock sandwich bag and dish soap (just put the undiluted soap in the bag and freeze). It seemed like a good option because they could be made in a custom size and shoved in a bra cup and it would be cheap to have a bunch ready to go.

  • If you are sensitive to lanolin, try the earth mama nipple butter or kerry's herbals miracle salve, both are non-lanolin based nipple cremes.  If you get really itchy wearing wool, or don't like the feel/taste of lamb, that can be an indicator of a possible lanolin issue.
(I got stuck in the quote box.) Thanks for the suggestions
