found out the baby wasn't as big as they expected it to be? I am supposed to be induced at 39w4d because baby right now, at 38 weeks is measuring 8 lbs already. Just wondering how accurate your measurements were when baby was finally delivered.
DD was expected to be between 8.5 and 9 pounds. They even did a last minute ultrasound (before making the decision to induce me) which also confirmed that the baby was over 8 pounds. She ended up being just under 8 so.. they were a little off. I don't think I would have changed anything since I had a perfect birth experience but... if things had gone wrong I definitely would have regretted doing the induction.
Yup. At 33-34 weeks I was told he was weighing 7lbs 2oz or so. I was expecting a giant. When was actually born at a couple of days short of 40 weeks, he weighed 7lbs 12oz. The measurements were WAY off.
I do not think they are real accurate. My last one had DS weighing 6.5 lbs this was 2 days before I had him. He ended up weighing a whole pound more. He was just really long for his weight so it was hard for them to get an accurate measurement.
I personally wouldn't be induced for a babies size. Unless you body is really favorable for an induction I would wait. My induction was awful and I would never do it again. I also didn't believe anyone on the nest when they told me it would suck.
Sorry, but that doesn't sound all that big to me, so I don't understand why they would induce, especially since those measurements are VERY unreliable... Besides, why can't you birth a 9+ pound baby?
I was expected to have a big baby due to GD and my 36 wk u/s. Probably at least 8.8 they said at the smallest. I was induced 5 days early and he ended up being only 7.1 lbs. LEss then the average size baby now. U/s aren't always correct, but discuss your opinions with your doc. I know women who have gone on to have vag births with 12 -14 lbs. It can be done.
My little mans measurements were right on target. He was measuring 8 lbs at the end of my 37th week & my water broke at the end of my 38th week & he was 8 lbs 12 ounces. Thank god I didn't go to 40 + weeks or he would have reached the 10 lbs + mark as expected.
Thanks ladies! I was afraid that this would be the case with most of your situations. I've heard u/s are off usually by a lb either way so I'm a little nervous about being induced when I don't need to be.
My doctor did an u/s before breaking my water. She ended up measuring the baby too and estimated the baby at 7lb 14ozs. I had him a few hours later and he was 7lb 8ozs, so they were fairly close, but still off almost half a pound.
A guy I work with- his wife had a growth u/s and they measured her baby at 9lbs. She ended up with a 10lb baby- so remember the measurements can always be off in the other direction too

I was measuring big and had big estimated based on 3 growth scans and she was big...
Call me crazy, but 8lbs at 38 weeks doesn't sound that big to me. My growth scan estimates were 5.5 lb at 33w, 8.5lb at 35w and 10.5 lb at 40w. She was 10.5lb at birth.
You don't HAVE to get induced just because they recommend it. I think it's silly for a doctor to recommend early induction for that, especially 8 lbs. I had two 9 pound babies, one with an u/s after my due date, and never had induction recommended to me.
Now that I am thinking back (and the whole last week of pregnancy is now a blur...), my doc specifically said that she didn't want to induce. I was looking at either a c-section if I went past 40 weeks. Big babies need to work their way down on their own or you have a c-section.

Good point! I was supposed to "labor down" with my 1st but the nurse had me start pushing right away. Ended up pushing for 2 hours, running out of steam, and he was delivered with a vacuum. (And a rather nasty wound on his head!)
Especially if you're not very dilated or effaced by the time they want to induce... I'd ask to wait it out.
Nope, mine was right on. At my 39 week appt. my doc estimated 9lb by my c/s date (2 days later)....DS was 8lb 15oz. My doc had said all through the 3rd tri he'd be 8-9lb.
But if you haven't had any progress, I'd be very hesitant to induce. I did NOT want a failed induction then an emergency c/s, and my doc agreed that this wasn't ideal. We went with a scheduled c/s for that reason- I had zero progress, baby was big, and I was really afraid of a painful failed induction. Loved my c/s and wouldn't do it any other way. JMO!

This is exactly why I was thrilled not to have a growth u/s. If anyone had told me DS was going to be 9+ pounds I would have freaked out. I measured perfectly average my whole pregnancy with weight gain and fundal height. He didn't drop really at all and I pushed from a -1 station. 4 hours of pushing, but he came out vaginally with no vacuum. I was exhausted when it was all over, but I am glad that whole time I wasn't thinking about his size or weight or it would have made it much more stressful. In the end I had 2nd degree tears, the same as my sister had with my niece who was only 6 pounds.
With DS, the day he was born, they estimated him to be 10.5lbs. He had been measuring big the entire 3rd tri, and his measurements were 1 of MANY reasons they did a c/s that day. He was 8lbs, 1oz when he was born that day at 36w4d. Yeah, 2.5 lbs off. But, they did estimate he would have been up to a 12lber had i made it full term.
DD they said the day before she was born was 6lbs. She was 7lbs, 4oz, also at 36w4d.
I have 3 doctors--2 of them around 35 wks were saying the baby is going to be about 10 pounds--I freaked! They were talking c/s and all. The one doctor said mid to upper 7's. I'm like WTF????!
Baby ended up being 7lbs13oz at birth. They can generally feel around the baby for size--that is relatively accurate. I was HUGE and so the other 2 were going by that.

One of the doofuses who estimated my baby's weight at my 38 week u/s said he could be approaching 12 pounds by his EDD... yeah, he was born at 9lb.

I had a growth u/s the day before I went into natural labor. Doc predicted baby was 8lbs 4 oz. DS was born at 42weeks exactly at 10.8 lbs. Vaginally.
It can be done. oh, and med free, too
