Ultrasound size estimate vs actual birth size

Hi ladies! So I went for an ultrasound yesterday as I'm overdue. They estimated the weight at 11.2 lbs! Yikes. And no, I don't have gestational diabeates. I called my OB right away and when he finally finished laughing he said he wasn't comfortable with me trying to push out a bambino that size. C-sec booked for Tuesday :(. Sad about not doing a vag birth but oh we'll, what will be will be. Sooooooo, my question to you ladies is ... if you had a T3 scan to estimate weight and you have had your little one, what was the estimated weight vs actual birth weight? Also what was the time between your scan and the date you delivered? Thanks!

  • I had an ultrasound the day before sge was born. They estimated her at 7lbs 8oz and she was actually 7lbs 5oz. They were pretty close

  • Hi. Lurking here. But I just wanted to say that my third was estimated to be between 9.4 and 9.7. He was born 3 days later at 10.11. (no GD).Two things about this. One, the ultrasound can be off. Two, I delivered him vaginally just fine and I am an average sized girl. He even had a 95th percentile head and I was fine. I am not sure if my OB would have let me deliver him naturally if he would have known he big he was, but if your OB is willing to let you try, I would try if that is what you want.

  • I had an u/s at 36 weeks and he measured 7lbs 9oz. He was born at 39 weeks and ironically was 7lbs 9 oz.... So mine was totally off!
  • My first was estimated to be 6 lbs 2 oz at 39 week ultrasound a week later when he arrived he was 8 lbs 2 oz. DS2 was estimated at 9 lbs on ultrasound at 40 weeks 5 days. She he was born at 41 weeks 3 days he was 9 lbs 2 oz. my ob says usually they are off by a pound either way.
  • The only one they've ever estimated weight was dd1. They said about 7.5 lbs... She was 9lb 9oz.

  • Looks like it was pretty accurate for most of you! I heard a lb either way as well. Forgot to mention that the scan I had 3 weeks ago was estimating 8lbs therfore i was shocked when told 11.2 yesterday. 1lb a week seems like a lot. Guess I will find out soon enough!
  • Nnooooooo!!!! Don't give in to the c section so easily!!! You can do it!

My baby was estimated to be 8lbs 14 oz and when she came out a week later she was actually 8lbs 6 oz.  I was told that U/S tend to run about a half pound over/under of actual size.

Mine was the exact same numbers just reversed! Estimated 8lb 6oz.. actual was 8lb 14oz 5 days later.

  • My DS was estimates to be 7 lbs 6 oz at 40w2d and when he was born at 41w exactly he was 7 lbs15 oz, so I think it was pretty accurate for us.

  • I had an us done in the morning and gave birth later that day. Us said 8lbs 3oz and she was born at 8lbs 2oz. Pretty darn close!
    One DD born 9/23/13.
    We're one and done!
  • Ultrasound at 36 weeks estimated DD at 6lbs 6oz and she was born at 39 weeks at 7lbs 4oz so I think it was pretty accurate for me.

    I hope you don't end up getting a c section for a 8 or 9 pounder.

  • I had a growth US at 38 weeks; they told me baby was 5 lbs 14 oz. He was born at 40wks+2 days and weighed 7lbs 3oz so they underestimated him I'd say. The deviation on the equipment said +/- 13oz though.

37w u/s said 5lb3oz, she was born the next day at 6lbs. I would not consent to a c/s based on estimated weight alone.

  • Had ultrasound done on a Monday and technician said baby was measuring 7lb 10oz...started the induction process that night because of low amino fluid...baby was born Wednesday morning at 2:23am weighing 8 lbs even.
  • Mine was right on. I had an ultrasound on Monday the 16th and he measured 9lbs 6oz and his head circumference was in the 95%. We did a csection, and he came out 9lbs 10 oz and with a head circ of 34. So we were right on.
  • I'm no help here because I didn't have an US after 19 weeks, but I was impressed with my mid wife's estimate. She felt around my stomach to size him up and said she thought he was a 7 lb baby. Six days later he was born weighing 7 lb, 4 oz. that's some skill!

Same thing happened to me! With my first DD my nurse in l&d felt around and guessed 7.12, she was 7.14. I was so amazed at how accurate she was just by feel.

  • I had an ultrasound at 36w5d. They dint predict the birth weight, but they estimated DS's weight to be 7.14 at the time of the ultrasound. He was born at 40w4d, and weighed 8.1. My l&d nurse guessed spot on by feeling my belly.
  • DS - 39w 4d. 8lb 12oz (95th%), estimated 50-60th%

    DD1 - 37w 3d. 5lb 13oz (5th%), estimated 50th%

    DD2 - 39w 5d. 6lb 13oz (35th %?), estimated 50-60th %

They are often very wrong! Good luck!

  • Still an inside baby, but I wanted to comment and enforce what @a2003tiger said. Discretion is advised while reading this comment.

I'm nosy. Why is your OB not comfortable with you trying a vaginal birth? Am I the only one side-eyeing this? That would make me not comfortable with him as an OB! I'm sure you're not the first lady with a large LO. Are there on the higher end of c/s rates at the hospital you're delivering at? This may explain why. I mean, if you're being monitored the entire time you're in natural labor, I don't see a lot of risk? (Please see disclaimer)

I'm adding that my grandmother had 4 children, her youngest was born in '66. Her smallest baby was 9lbs 5oz. Two were nearly 11lbs. If she could do it, and 4 times at that, why can't we?

I would not agree with a c/s if I was told my LO was 11lbs tomorrow. Are there any other options for you, or have you already made your decision? And if my OB said he wasn't comfortable with me trying to deliver, not only is that my fault for not finding out that information ahead of time, but I would find an OB really quickly who is comfortable with that.

I understand your case either way, I guess I just don't understand it. Disclaimer, I'm not a trained medical professional and this comment is solely a matter of opinion and nowhere near fact. This comment is in no way to be construed as "don't trust your medical professional." I'm more concerned with the medical professional being questionable in this case, but I obviously can't know a stranger on the internet(or her OB)'s whole story.

  • Couldn't agree with @msronzio more. Please just be educated and make an informed decision. Don't just go on what your OB says. I was pushed into my first c-section and retrospectively, it wasn't necessary at that time. But I wasn't educated enough to second guess my OB. I regret that. Not the c-section, but the not making an informed decision.

  • With DS....estimated 4.9lbs at 30ish weeks, arrived at 34w6days weighing 6.7lbs, so half a pound every 2 weeks, pretty close.

DD was 4.12 at 31 weeks and arrived at 37 weeks at 7.8lbs, again, about .4 difference from estimate.
