Pregnancy Classes

My hospital offers a series of classes - Maternity Tour, Child birthing, Breast Feeding, etc...its not written anywhere on their site, but is there a recommendation of when to take these classes? Would 5 months be too early or is it more advantageous to wait until later in the pregnancy?

Re: Pregnancy Classes

  • BF and birthing classes are good ones. I went to both and the BF helped me solidify my decision to EBF. I think the BF class could be taken at any time but the other two should be taken closer to your due date. Pregnancy brain is a real thing so it would be a shame if you forgot some of the information. ;)

  • I did the maternity tour with my last pregnancy and loved it. Glad to know what it looked like and what to expect when I got there. I will do it again bc they have completely redone our hospital in the three years since I had my last baby.

I am also signing DD up for a sibling class where they teach her how to hold a baby, give it a bottle etc. She can't wait for her big sister class. We're doing it in December.

Make sure you register early even if you decide to wait to take the classes bc at my hospital at least they fill up fast!
  • My hospital reccomends that you complete classes at least a month before your due date.
  • We're doing the maternity tour in a week and I can't wait! My doc recommended signing up for classes at our hospital early, because like PP said they tend to fill up, but waiting to schedule for around month 6-7.

  • I read on my Midwifes website that they recommend doing it 1-2 months before your due date....but as Sisimama10 said...make sure you register like 4 months before or when ever you can for the dates that you want to take. Right now they don't have dates closer to my due date so I have to keep watching and waiting until I can call and sign up right away for all the classes...BF, Tour, Birthing, Etc. Hope this helps!

  • With DD I remember being pretty large when taking them which was a struggle getting up and down from the floor but kept it fresh in my mind.

  • I did the maternity tour pretty early on because i just wanted to make sure it is what i wanted.
I also took the class around 8 months. I was very happy that i did the class. It helped me be prepared to do a drug free birth. They taught me the breathing techniques and positions i could use to cope with the pain.

  • My classes say to finish a month before your due date.  They are 7 wk classes so starting around 28-29 wks for me.
