XP: From Co-Sleeping to Crib Sleeping

Hi All --

DH & I have co-slept wonderfully with our little guy for 7 months. However, its time that we reclaim our bed space. He's a little too squirmy at night and keeps us both up with kicking and hitting. I've also woken up a couple times to him trying to hurl himself off the side of the bed (he's crawling and standing up on things). I think its best for my own sleep ability and his safety to get him into his crib.

We try at the beginning of the night to start off in the crib. However, when I put him down on the crib mattress after he's fallen asleep nursing, he squirms himself awake. After that happening 3 or 4 times, I give up. I'm not into the CIO plan at this stage. He only gets himself so worked up that he starts either vomiting or choking and definitely can't sleep after that level of physical stress.

Any ideas or thoughts as to how to transition him to the crib? I realize this will take many nights to get working, so I'm definitely not looking for a quick fix.

Thanks so much (in advance),

Kate

I was in the same boat as you until my DS turned 7 months. I then switched him into his crib permanently. I use to start the night in the crib and he would then wake up an hour or two later. He has vomited once as well from screaming when I first tried letting him CIO when he was 6 months, which made me stop and then I needed to try again because he would wake me so much at night co-sleeping. So at 7 months I tried again but I first made sure I had a great bedtime routine. Once the bedtime routine was established it became easier. He knew what was coming next and it helped transition him to the crib. I first started putting him down very drowsy and letting him cry. He didnt scream but would just cry so he never got so worked up to vomit. First night took 30 mins of crying and next night less and so on. Now I put him down in the crib almost asleep and he falls asleep and STTN.
