Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Diapering Troubles

DS is 22 months as of a few days ago. Lately he has no interest in letting me change his diapers. I mean it's a 'let's run from mommy/daddy because she's going after the diapers and wipes, when she catches us let's kick and scream' type of thing. This has been going on for about two weeks now. I'm beside myself on what to do as he doesn't seem interested in potty training at all, which he's still young for I guess. He does have a potty, he does barge in on both myself and DH going to the bathroom, and has sat on his potty a few times and even went. Those few times he has went I believe it was put coincidence. Any helpful advice?

Re: Diapering Troubles

  • Are you concerned about the tantrums over diaper changes or about his lack of interest in the potty?

If the former, I would give him something to distract him during diaper changes - stickers, special toys just for diaper changes, books to read....

If the latte, I wouldn't worry.  22 months is REALLY early for potty training.  Especially for boys.  In my son's daycare class, the older kids moved out and into preschool at 2.5.  At that time only one of them, out of the entire class, was potty trained.

  • My husband came up with a song he likes to call "Change Your Butt".  He essentially just sings that over and over again during a diaper change, in varying degrees of funny voices.  It's the only thing that gets C to stay calm during a diaper change.  She loves music, and will lay there and bop her little head in time to his singing.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm not worried about him not being potty trained by any means, just the having to wrestle him part. My son would never lay still the entire time, and I don't try to make him. A lot of the time I let him run without the diaper as well. I have tried potty training, he was highly interested for about 2 days, and now he refuses to sit or stand at the potty. Any tips for helping in aid to potty train a little boy?

  • ^^ Yep. Pull up diapers have made my life a ton easier.

  • Stand up diapering is the only thing I could suggest trying.  I got really good at it working at a daycare years ago and we didn't have the pull up diapers then  =)
