Medela vs Ameda

I am in the process of ordering my pump through insurance.  Last time I had the Medela Pump in Style, after a Lansinoh and a Playtex broke on me.  I am getting the one through insurance on the off chance that the one I have decides it doesn't want to work this time around.

The place I am ordering through offers both the Medela Advanced and the Ameda Purely Yours.  Have any of you ladies used these? I would love some feedback on which one worked for you or any issued you had. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Medela vs Ameda

  • I ordered the medela advanced through insurance but have not used or received it yet.

  • My baby was born on 9/16 and I got the Medela Advanced which was covered by my insurance.  I don't have anything to compare it to since this is my first baby and first pump, but it seems to do the trick.  I am already doing a lot of pumping because we are trying to work through some latch issues.

  • Ameda Purely Yours is the same as the Lansinoh.  Personally I prefer those two over the Medela.

Ditto this exactly, except my baby was born 9/20.

  • Can I add a Q related to this? I just ordered mine from insurance yesterday and they only cover the Ameda Purely Yours, which is fine, two of my friends recommended that pump anyway so all cool there.

What replacement parts/accessories do people who know things recommend having on hand?

  • I did not know much about the ameda until my DH and I went to a BF'ing class.. (FTM), the instructor told the class that the ameda is basically the same. The engineers that developed ameda were originally from medela, they left the medela and started there own company. What we were told is that the science behind it is based on medela engineering. I have not done any additional research, just thought I'd share what we were told.

Haven't used mine but I went with the Ameda since it's got a closed system. I think they're pretty similar. Medela has parts more easily available (though Ameda you can order off the internet).

I was under the understanding they were both closed systems? I tried to look at the advanced online but I'm only finding the advanced pump in style. If the Ameda is the same as the Lansinoh that would make me shy away from it. The motor burned up in my old one and screwed me while at work :-( maybe I just had a bad one tho!

  • I have one of each and like them both. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

  • I had an Ameda with DD1 and loved it, it worked better than the hospital grade Medela I used at work. I ordered a second one for this baby.

  • I have the Ameda Purely Yours through insurance. I haven't used it yet, but have pulled it out of the box and messed with it a little bit. The directions seem much less complicated than what I first thought.

Mine came with bags plus the attachment to hang the bags on instead of transferring from the bottle. I have a phone number for replacement parts through my insurance so I'm not sure where else they are available.

  • i read a ton of comparison reviews, and they appear to be about the same in function. there were some differences in size, and noise. i went with the ameda. the only thing that kind of sucks about it is that BRU is the only store with replacement parts and accessories. I ordered some extra parts off amazon.
You can call Ameda directly and normally they will send you replacement parts for free.

  • Online reviews said ameda is really good about replacing the system if something breaks.
  • I'm currently using the medela advanced that I just got through my insurance. It's the same as the pump they had for new moms at the hospital except its in a bag. It works great. It may be good for you to know what they offer at the hospital and what the lactation consultants prefer. The hospital lactation consultants (that are free for me to come and visit anytime) have all the medela parts to give out for free so I don't have to buy things like nipple shields, breast shields, tubing, bottles, etc. it's been very convenient!

  • When I looked up Amazon reviews, it seemed most people felt overall the Medela is a better, more powerful pump.  It seemed the only thing the Ameda had going for it was that it is a closed system.

I used the Medela for a year 3-6 times a day.  It worked great for me.
  • I have the Purely Yours and am using a real fancy Medela Symphony while in the hospital. I am actually getting better volume with the Purely Yours, but that may be because the Medela is too sophisticated for me to set the program correctly.

i reccomend this kit because it has everything except the flanges and the bottles/bags
Thanks so much for the link, I appreciate the response!

Not sure, I couldn't tell. Looks to have the same motor. The bag isn't as pretty on the advanced as it is on the in style I know. I didn't have a choice between the two so didn't research the differences much.
