Success after IF

Anyone's 2nd IVF work after a failed 1st (including FETs)?

I have just had my 5th FET & it didn't work =(  Most of my history is in my siggy (it won't update for me!).

Next step would be a whole new IVF with genetic testing.  DH and I are just unsure if a new IVF cycle will bring a different outcome (although the testing will be new this time).

Just looking for any feedback/thoughts.

My TTC Journey:
Dx: Hypothalamic amenorrhea / mild PCOS (Pretty much a hormone/ovulatory disorder)
Progesterone to induce period w/ the goal of Clomid - never got period (September 2011). Referred to RE.
Femera - never responded to the meds (December 2011)
Clomid with TI - BFN (February 2012)
Injectables (Menopur) - hyperstimulated/canceled (March 2012)
Injectables #2 (Menopur) with TI- BFN (May 2012)
IVF - OHSS (transfer canceled), but 11 frozen! (June 1012)
FET - 1 transferred on 8/09/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 350.3; Beta#2: 365; Beta#3: 157. Biochemical pregnancy.
FET # 2 - 1 transferred on 11/01/12. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): 337; Beta#2: 769. BFP!!! 1st ultrasound 11/28/12 showed heartbeat, but measuring 5 days behind. 2nd ultrasound 12/05/12 - miscarriage.
FET # 3 - 1 transferred on 1/24/13. Beta#1 (11dp5dt): BFN.
FET # 4 - 2 transferred on 3/21/13.  Bet #1 (11dp5dt): 660; Beta#2: 1,300.  Miscarried at home @ 6 weeks.

FET # 5 - 2 transferred on 7/12/13.  Beta #1 (10dp6dt): BFN.
Attempted an IUI in late August 2013, but didn't respond well.
IVF #2 with PGS - Stims started 10/28 with retrieval on 11/11.  Of 14 mature eggs, 10 fertilized, 4 made it to Day 5 & 1 made it to Day 6. We did PGS on the Day 5 embryos, and 3 of 4 were normal. Had ET on 11/17. Beta #1 (8dp6dt): 203. Beta #2 (10dp6dt): 618. We since had two ultrasounds & on 12/19, our RE released us to the OB.  On 1/02/14, we had our first ultrasound with the OB where we heard the heartbeat.  We are so thankful for the blessing & crossing every finger & toe for a healthy & successful pregnancy.

  • I'm not sure if you consider ivf "working" just to get BFP or to have a baby to take home.  I never had any that made it to freeze.  My 1st, 2nd, and 3rd IVF cycles failed.  My 4th, 5th, and 6th got BFP but early m/c.  My 7th gave us DS.  I thank God that we didn't give up too soon!  (Unexplained IF).

  • I never had any frozen embyros, but did not have a (IVF) BFP until my second full cycle. My first cycle was an antagonist (high responder) protocol. It was cancelled because it turned out I wasn't the high responder I had been during my IUIs and I developed a dominant follicle on trigger day. My first full cycle was Lupron Stop. We had a total of nine embryos and transferred a textbook perfect blast, but it did not stick. The second cycle was also Lupron Stop, but my Lupron was lowered and my stims were upped. I also did assisted hatching and pre/post transfer acupuncture. My ER was also far less painful, so I was not in any pain by transfer day. We transferred 2 out of our 16 embryos and they became our twin boys.

I really think the AH and acu helped things. I have poor embryo quality, which resulted in sub par blastocysts. Since my clinic only freezes the best, we never had any make it to freeze. I think AH helped give them the boost they needed. Also, my first transfer resulted in VERY intense cramps and I believe the acu helped out with that.

Three TI cycles (BFP...miscarriage), five IUI attempts and 2.5 IVF cycles later...BFP!!

  • (((hugs))) I'm so sorry for your losses.

Our first IVF was a c/p after we transferred 2 embryos.

Our second IVF was a success! They mixed up my meds a bit and added menopur to my original follistim dose. That seemed to be the magic cocktail for me. We didn't have any testing done, but we also did not have multiple losses.

I had OHSS with both cycles, but it was much worse with my successful BFP cycle. GL!

dx: MFI 0% morph & low count. Occasional Anovulatory cycles.

  • My second fresh IVF was a much better cycle for me.  The first left me with nothing to freeze and iffy quality embryos.  Obvisously a BFN.

The cycle that worked was the 2nd FET after the 2nd fresh IVF.  That was the only time I have ever been pregnant.  I had ID twin girls.  We transferred the last of the 3 frozen embryos I had.  They were stored for 3 years.  We adopted in between.  Out of 10 total embryos transferred only one ever implanted and resulted in a live birth.  I am unexplained, although my last cycle my thyroid was a little off (not abnormal but higher than they like for TTC cycles), so I started a low dose of synthroid.

Our entire reproductive journey took 7 years our girls were born.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

  • I am so sorry for your losses. did youmhave a RLP? My losses were attributed to bad luck. If we had another I would definitely do IVF with PGD. For me IVF #1 was a BFP but I had a m/c. IVF #2 was a BFP and it stuck. IF is hard enough but IF plus m/c is brutal. Wishing you all the best!

Surprise! Baby #4 is due in March!
  • Yes. Kind of, I had no embryos to freeze after my first cycle. I had a day 3 transfer because they weren;t looking so hot & then the rest freaked out & died. They never figured out why.

The second time, the second day everything looked the same, so they set me up for a day 3 transfer. Then they called me that morning & said overnight my embryos started to look better & to come on day 5. Transfered 2, got DD. Now I'm gearing up to use my 2 frosties. GL!

  • I'm so glad you posted this...we are trying to decide if we try a second round of IVF too. I mean, we pretty much have decided but its still a lot to take in and scary thinking about going through this again. We did PGD and will continue to use PGD because I have a genetic disorder we are trying to prevent from being passed on to our children which is why we are doing IVF in the first place. Our clinic here in Florida uses Genesis Genetics out of Detroit. It's quite amazing what they are capable of doing and finding. They took both my husbands and my DNA and developed a probe which is basically a test specifically for us. Check them out and I wish you the best!! Hopefully our second rounds of IVF will be successful!!
2013- 2 IVF cycles with PGD to prevent genetic disorder from being passed on. Both BFFN :(
    2/2014 pregnant!  EDD 10/17/2014

    All always welcome! :)

  • Yes.  I had 1 IVF, BFN and 2 FETs.  Then we did our 2nd fresh IVF, my doc changed up the protocol and I transferred 2 fresh that time.  Resulted in DD and I have 1 frostie from that. IF sucks!  I am sorry for all that you have gone through!

Best of luck to you, this is a challenging time and only you can know what is best for you and your family.  I will be thinking of you!
