No hb with doppler and anterior placenta

Yesterday I had an appointment with my new midwife and she was trying to find the hb with a doppler but couldn't locate it.  She also said that it seemed like my placenta was developing on the anterior.  My u/s at 11w3d showed a good strong hb and a nice little one measuring 11w6d.  My questions are, has anyone else not been able to find a hb with a doppler at 12w2d?  Is she able to determine the position of the placenta by feel alone or does that require an u/s?

I have my nt scan scheduled for Monday, but in the mean time, I'm trying hard not to worry.

  • @Crystal120410 - was it at your doctor that you couldn't find it?  I feel like if she's a professional she should be able to find it even if we can't find it at home.  Or am I wrong on that?

  • I have an anterior placenta.  At our 12w appointment, before my OB even tried to find the HB with the doppler she said "don't panic, at 12 weeks it can be difficult to find the HB with a doppler". She eventually found the HB, but it did take her a good 20 minutes.

We had our NT scan just prior to our 12 week appointment, during the NT scan the ultrasound tech indicated I have an anterior placenta.

I have an at home doppler (Sonoline B), I could not find the HB at home until 14weeks 5 days.....

  • I was told about my anterior placenta via ultrasound.  I don't know how she'd be able to tell you that without physically seeing it.

My OB had a hard time finding the heartbeat a couple times because baby was a dance machine, it took a long time but she eventually found it.

  • I have an anterior placenta, which was discovered by u/s before I was released to the OB.  I think finding a hb early takes a skilled hand when they are so little. My OB wouldn't try at 10w5d, but a NP offered and she found it. =) I guess she's the best in the office at finding hb early by doppler. I wouldn't worry because I was told statistically the odds of miscarrying starts to drop significantly after 10 weeks. Also, you just heard a strong hb a week ago. GL & FX for a great NT scan.

  • I couldn't find the HB with my doppler until I was 13 weeks and some days. I freaked the eff out beforehand too. And I don't have an AP.

My doctor didn't even try to look for the HB on the doppler until I was 16 weeks, so no experience on them not finding it at an appointment at 12 weeks.

She did say though that I shouldn't even try to look for it before 14 weeks because I might not be able to find it.

  • My doc had a hard time with the doppler until I was 16w. She REALLY had to dig around all over my belly and even then, we could barely hear the HB between the static. She was able to hear kicks and punches and those sounded like pops. I have an anterior placenta and a retroverted (tipped) uterus making it extra hard to find.

    Best of luck, Bee.

  • Hey BeeBee. You are totally okay. The reason your MW thinks its an anterior placenta is probably because of the fact that she had trouble finding the HB. Anterior placenta is a variation on normal that simply creates a cushion between your belly and the baby, causing it to muffle the heartbeat, and also you will probably feel your baby a bit later (20 weeks). My sister had this experience, too, and her baby is completely fine. You are doing all the right things for you and baby. If something was wrong, you might feel something else: pain, bleeding, etc. you are ok! I know its tough not to worry, but your MW sounds intelligent and prepared. Hang in there.
