Positive urine test but negative blood test?

I need to know if anyone else has dealt with this before. I don't know what to think or how to feel.

I got a positive on a dollar store test Tuesday morning. It was super light so I got a pack of FRER and got a positive on that later in the day before 3 minutes. Today I had a doctors appointment and I thought 'Know what would be horrible? Having them tell me I'm not pregnant' So I took the second FRER and it came up positive instantly, so I was feeling pretty good about my doctor's appointment.

I get there and he tells me my test is negative, but only 2 minutes after I handed my pee over to the secretary/nurse person. I'm thinking 'Whatever, I know I'm pregnant' so he sends me for a blood test. I started feeling badly so I went to the store after my blood test and got some digitals. Positive within 3 minutes as well, conception indicator says 1-2 weeks.

Doctor just called me and said my blood test with negative. What the heck is going on? I feel like he thinks I'm crazy. I'm on CD39 and still no period and four positive tests from 3 different brands. Anyone have any insight?

Re: Positive urine test but negative blood test?

  • No, he didn't! That's what someone else suggested, that maybe it was below the level they consider pregnant.

I have a lot of mixed emotions right now, I want this baby so badly but he doesn't seem to think it's real. He said he's never had someone get so many positives at home but negative with him and negative on the blood test.

  • A good friend shared a blog with me, https://crabigailadams.wordpress.com/2012/05/05/positive-home-tests-negative-blood/

It's making me feel better. Fingers crossed that this sticks.

  • I also wonder what your beta number was. A FRER will turn positive at 5 or 6. 5 and under is considered "not pregnant." So either your beta was really low (a possible chemical pregnancy) or...well really that's all I can think of. If your first positive was on Tuesday then your levels should be above 5 by now.

I'm sorry, I know its all very confusing. I know the tests at the doc office aren't as sensitive as FRER, but a blood test pretty much is what it is unless somehow they mixed up your results.

    I'm sorry!

  • I don't want to get your hopes up, but this happened to me.  I was testing postive on FRERs and had my first positive beta (it was low at 14) on a Friday.  I went for repeat blood work the next Monday.  I knew it would be higher since my tests got darker and darker.  The nurse called me and said it was 0.  I was so devasted.

Tuesday I went in to the doctor, took all of the postive tests I took since the nurse had called, and even tested positive on their urine test.  I had more blood work done, but I was prepared for the worst (he mentioned so many options, CP, my body was attacking the pregnancy, blah, blah, blah).  That beta was a 166.  They made the lab run the blood from Monday again, and it was 103, not 0.

My beta continued to rise appropriately and everyone is happy with the results.  My point is, while they are rare, lab errors do occur.  Keep testing to prove to yourself and your doctor that something is wrong.  You should not be getting positive urine tests and negative blood tests.  Good luck!!

  • If it makes you feel better when I got my BFP with DD I called my doctor right away to ask for a blood test to confirm the pregnancy. They told me they don't do blood tests that a positive on the urine stick is a positive and scheduled me for an 8 week appointment. Are you going back for more bloodwork next week? Is this your first time POAS or have you had negative urine sticks in the past? It's rare but some women produce a small amount of HCG when not pregnant and will always get a positive test even though they're not pregnant (although I would imagine the blood test would also be positive). As long as AF doesn't show up It sounds like you're pregnant, your dr should run more tests. Good luck and let us know what happens

  • Doctor's tests are notorious for being less sensitive. I had a positive digital and the next day I took the one my RE gave me and if I didn't already know, I would have dismissed it as negative.
Yeah, I was really surprised. They look so similar to the dollar store ones and I've had such good luck with those. If I ever do this again I'm going to wait longer before going in to avoid this all. I was so surprised a digital showed positive when I went home right after I got the negative at his office. I thought those were the least sensitive.
