  Hello.
  
  I work for ncsu so I have the state health plan. I would call the insurance company. When I had an ultrasound at 12 weeksish for trisomy 13 (sp???) it was not covered. I also had one at 6 weeks, 16 weeks, and 18 weeks. Those were all "medically needed" and covered. I think it depends on the situation.
  
  You can also hear the heart beat when they use the fetal dopplar although not as early as 6 weeks (I think close to 10-12).
