Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby Food

My daughter is 5 1/2 months old and started cereal at 5months. She only takes about 2 tablespoons at breakfast and dinner. The past 2 days I feel like I am almost forcing her to eat it, she really isn't interested in it. My doctor said to wait to add yellow/orange veggies at 6 months, fruit at 7mths and green veg at 8 months! I feel like this is to long to wait to add anything but cereal especially now that she really isn't into it. I was thinking of adding the yellow/orange veg such as sweet potato now with the cereal to try and give her something with a lil more flavor with the hopes that she will be more into it. What do you guys think? Any support/advice on feeding her different foods and when would greatly be appreciated :)

Re: Baby Food

  • I haven't ever heard any reasoning for an introduction schedule like the one your doctor has suggested.  It sounds like his personal preference, which is fine but it means it's not scientific and not something you should feel you need to defer to him on.

I skipped cereal and started with pureed sweet potatoes mixed with formula, then tried green beans, then carrots.  Tess loved them all.  We'd just started with bananas (YUM!) when she got a uti and lost her appetite. If your daughter is acting a little off in other ways (quieter or fussier than normal, drinking less), it's possible she's not feeling well.

I have no idea why a baby needs to start on cereals.  It makes no sense to me.

Oh, and we started with the veggies at about 4.5 months because she was giving all the signs she was ready for solids, but I wasn't good about making it an every day thing until 5 months.
They don't need to start on cereal but there are reasons it has long been the preferred first food.  First, cereals are iron fortified.  Right around the time you start solids is when breastfed babies start to lose their iron stores.  Of course, there are other things you can do to up their iron but cereal is one of those options.  Also, rice allergies are very rare so cereal has been considered one of the safest first foods from an allergy standpoint.

  • What do you guys give your baby for breakfast , lunch, and dinner? Also how many/ounces of bottles a day now?
  • I haven't started yet but our pedi suggested starting with avocado first.
  • We are 20 weeks and started about 18 weeks on Oatmeal cereal. She also loves banana but I've heard that banana causes constipation so we don't do that often. We have been working with avacodo this week.

Target had Gerber 1st foods on sale so I bougth a few of them. We'll be doing one new one a week, starting on Sundays (easier for me to remember).

Still not too sure how to incorporate them into meal time, except 2x a day mid am and when we sit down to dinner.

Also, anyone have thoughts on starting on meats?

  • We are not going with cereal first, instead waiting until 8/9m to start vegs & fruits. we'll start with avocados as well.

  • At 4.5 months we started with oatmeal but after 3-4 times we saw he was getting a rash from it so we switched to avocado right away with mixed results. Sweet potatoes and carrots so far, 5 months to 5.5 months, going much better.  He LOVES the carrots, for some reason.
  • Thanks! Going to start some sweet potatoes this week then squash and maybe carrots after for now.
  • I mix a little organic applesauce in with the cereal. She likes it much better then. My lo is 5 months and I started veggies at 4 and a half months.

    New Mommy!!!

  • We will start with fruits and veggies at six months. Your doctor's advice definitely isn't the only way to go... And I def think you can intro green veggies before 9 months!!!

  • DD is 4 months old and I just started oatmeal. She loved it yesterday. I make 98% of our baby food. But WWW.wholesomebabyfood.com has a great chart of when to introduce foods. I used that chart with my son and I really liked it. Good luck!
