sippies....Handles or no handles??

Hey ladies. Up until now we've been using the two handled Nuby sippy cups. They've worked GREAT with DS. Well last night I noticed his cup of water had leaked all over my bag and noticed the reason why was because he figured out a way to make a whole in the spout. I can't seem to find replacement spouts for this specific cup  so when I was at BRU I bought a 2 pack of the Nuby cup without handles figuring it'll help him learn how to hold a cup for when he's ready for the big boy cup (he never held his bottle).

Are most of you giving sippies that have no handles to your kids?

Re: sippies....Handles or no handles??

  • our sippies have handles, (the Nuk that have the attachedto the bottom) but he often pulls them off...

  • DD really needed the handles until a few months ago (19 months or so). She would occasionally use the ones w/ no handles, but despite my encouraging her to move toward using an open cup, she's only just been ready for that step in the past few weeks.

  • Right now, all of his have handles.  But he is getting all new bigger sippys for Christmas and these new ones do not have handles.

  • We have both.  We started out with the ones with handles and I would put water or juice in them.  When I introduced milk I started using the ones without handles because they were shaped more like a bottle and I thought it might help with the transition.

She doesn't seem to care either way.

  • DD has both kinds (with and without handles). We use the no-handle most of the time at home, but I like the handles when we're out at a restaurant or something (her grip is a lot shakier when she's distracted :).

  • I give both and she actually does better without the handle. I think it's because she has to use two hands to drink. With the handled ones, she can just use one hand and bring it towards her mouth.

  • Some we bought ended up having handles.  Thank goodness they were removable as DD hated them.

    No handles here.

  • I never gave my son sippy cups with handles. It taught him to hold a cup properly earlier.
  • We started out with the Nuby ones with handles:

We used those for several months.  They were good for DS to learn to use the cup by himself.  Then DS decided the handles were useful in banging and throwing his cups, so we cut out any cups with handles.  So we went with the Nuby no handles:

The soft spout cups were good for transitioning to a sippy from a bottle.  Then a few months ago, DS learned that if he turned these cups upside down and pushed the spout down on his tray or a table or whatever, that the milk inside would pour out of it.  Especially if he pushed it down and held it there.  This turned into quite a game!  DS had the hang of using the sippy cups by then, so we switched to all hard spout cups.  We've had great luck with hard spout ones and not having them leak like all the soft spouts did....no matter how "leak-proof" or "no-leak" they SAY they are!  lol.

That's exactly what DS has learned to do. Hmmmmmm might have to switch to the hard spout ones instead. Glad I asked before buying more of the no handle soft spout nuby's!

  • Paige HATES the ones with handles so we just packed those away.  She does not like them.  All her non handled ones were in the dishwasher so I gave her a handled one the other day and she looked at me like "You have got to be kidding!" but she figured it out - she put her hand on the inside under the handles....lol.   I don't know it just isn't natural to her I guess.  But then again she would rather use a REAL cup (no lid)  I gave her one the other day to test her and she tilted her head back and it went EVERYWHERE....lol - OOPS!

  • We have about 6 with handles and 2 without handles.  I got her 2 more without handles for Christmas.  She does fine with all of them.

  • I started with handles then graduated to no handles.  I don;t think they sell replacement spouts...I've never found them.  Just a way for the manufacturer to get us to buy the whole cup.
  • DD has some of both. I don't believe having sippys with handles prevented her in learning to drink from a regular cup - she started drinking from a cup (held by us) before she was 11 months old, and now she has been drinking from her own cup for a couple of months and still uses both kinds of sippys.

DD also chewed through one of those NUBY spouts - she has two NUBY cups and one Gerber sippy with the valve, which doesn't leak at all.

  • We use the Nuby mega straw sippies without the handles, and DD does great with them even though she is breastfed and never learned to hold a bottle.

We had another Nuby straw sippy with handles when she was younger, but it always leaked. So then we tried the Gerber spout sippy without handles, but she couldn't figure out how to tilt it. Then we tried the mega Nuby ones, and she had no trouble with them.

  • No handles for us. ?DS?never seemed to care if there were handles or not so I bought ones without.

He liked to hold his own bottle so maybe that made it a bit easier. ?

  • DD2 uses playtex beginner cups w/ 2 handles.  She also steals her sister's stage 3 playtex sippies and does fine with those.
  • We have both for DD, I thought the handles would be easier for her but she really doesn't show a difference in which one she prefers, she drinks fine from either one.
  • We've only tried the straw cup by Nuby and DD still can't use it.  It was a total waste for us, so I haven't bought any of their other products yet, so I'm not sure on that brand what to tell you.

BUT I have found that both the Playtex and Gerber brands are awesome, don't leak, easily cleaned, etc.  I prefer the no handles ones b/c they fit in her diaper bag easier, but DD doesn't have a preference.

  • I use cups with no handles.  I found that with both of my girls, that the handles made it harder for them.  They didn't always want to hold both handles but on the cups with no handles, they have no choice.  I started both my girls with the small cups - the use and toss ones that come in a smaller size.  I just recently started my 9 month old on the Munckin 9oz ones and only fill them a little bit so its not too heavy and she does awesome with it.

  • We started her with the one with handles and then moved to the ones without.  She primarily uses the ones without now and we only go back to the handled ones when we run out of the other.

  • Are you talking about the Nuby straw cups?

The spouts from the ones at BRU do "break" easily.  Target also sells the Nuby straw cups, they are the same as the ones from BRU but the straw is different, and is VERY hard to poke a hole in.

Also the ones without handles are BPA free, the ones with handles have BPA (if it matters to you).

Nope its not the straw cups, I have those too which he now doesn't like. Of course AFTER I spent money buying enough for a day's worth!  Good to know that Target does have better Nuby straw cups than BRU does. Will keep that in mind whenever I do need to go back to those.

  • We only used a cup with handles for the first few months.  We have handles for the take 'n' toss cups but I think they're a PITA to take on and off...and they just make it easier for DD to throw the cup, so we don't use them anymore!

DD has no problem using her sippys without any handle.
