Sippy Cups

Got a generic question for everybody. We have a 4 month Avent sippy cup for Hannah, which she enjoys drinking out of. We also have a Dr. Brown's 6 month sippy cup. The only problem with these cups is that she can't drink by herself. She isn't capable of tilting it back. So two questions.

1. At what age did your LO start using a sippy cup by themselves?
2. Is it worth it to get a straw sippy cup and start teaching her to use that now?

Thanks!

Re: Sippy Cups

  • 1. We used the Dr. Browns also, and we started at 6-7 months. When we first started, DS had to use the detachable handles because he wouldn't/couldn't hold the cup by himself without it. Once the handles were on he was fine.

    2. For DS it was harder to grasp trying to use the straw, and he didn't really "get it" till he was closer to one. So for us, trying to teach him to use a straw didn't go well (for a couple of months).

Does she take a bottle independently? DS never had a bottle outside of DC because I was always with him and I BF him. At DC, they wouldn't allow him to hold his own bottle because it was BM. - I don't know why. I think this is why he had a harder time learning to tip the cup back.

No, back when she was 3.5 months old she absolutely refused to use a bottle. Which is why I got the special Avent sippy cup. But we had to tilt it for her. I just see her trying so hard to get the water out of the cup but she can't get it. She did once when she was reclined on my hubby she managed to tilt it enough. But while she is in her highchair, no luck.

  • DD never got the hang of ttipping the cup back, so we started her with straw cups around 9 months. Playtex makes small ones with handles that have a place you can squeeze it a little to help them get the hang of it.

  • You can try the staw cup, but honestly I think she will soon learn to tip it back. If you just keep helping her, she will pick it up.

Our problem now is that DS tries to tip everything back so when he has a straw cup he gets frustrated when it's tipped back and he can't get anything to drink!

E does that too!  It took her a while to figure out how to tilt the cup back herself, even though she had been holding bottles herself for a while.  I drink out of a straw cup all the time, so E was familiar with the look of a straw cup, and she always wanted to drink out of mine.  We started with letting her suck from the bottom of a prefilled straw, and she finally figured out to suck on the straw.  She drinks perfectly out of my straw cup or a straw cup at a restaurant.  But all of the fancy straw cups I buy at the store for her to use?  Not interested.

This! We used these same cups for DS. He could never do a sippy cup. But now he uses a regular cup fine. No need to worry about the sippy cup. I recommend the straw ones! They're awesome if your child can use a straw.

  • DS started using straw cup at 6 months and by 11 months he was on a regular advent sippy cup with no straw lifting by himself. But to this day now he is so use to his advent sippy he thinks he has to lift the one with the strawl and then gets nothing to come out.

  • We introduced Nuby sippy cups with handles, but they didn't really get it until 8 mos. before that, they'd only lay on their backs and spit water out. I think I'm going to try Playtex with the whole milk transition, but we'll see.

I think I did Zoli straw cups at meals around 8-9 mos. It only took a day or two of working with them before they understood. Now, they do well with any straw.

We had the same experience.  He didn't get the straw for a while.  And when I did introduce straw cups, I had to take out the straw inside so he could tip back the cup.  Every kid is different though, and I've heard a lot of mom's have better success with the straws, so try one if you think she'll do better with it.
