Inducing my own labor?

EDIT:  Please just skip over this if you're annoyed by the topic.  I didn't realize it was dead as a doornail. ;)

I am definitely pro 'let your baby come when he's good and ready, and fully baked'.  However, I have GD, and I have a baby that is estimated to be 7.5lbs right now and 9lbs at birth.  If you take into consideration that that estimation could be off by 2lbs in either direction, there is a chance that I could have a 7lb or an 11lb baby.

I am definitely not concerned about birthing a 9lb baby.  DS was 7lbs 15oz and 1lb more is not a big deal.  According to my OB I have a large enough pelvis that it doesn't worry her either.  However, I had a growth scan yesterday and everything is measuring a tiny bit ahead except for his belly diameter which is 96th percentile.  That concerned my OB that I may have trouble progressing or possible shoulder dystocia.

As she was walking out of the room she said that she would like me to go into labor any time between now and my due date, but the sooner the better as far as his size.  She also doesn't want me to go past my due date.  I wish I had caught her and asked her a few more questions, but instead I'll ask them here and see if anyone has any advice until I can talk to her! ;)

I am a total noob when it comes to methods of trying to 'induce' yourself.  DS came just a couple of hours late for his due date, so I never got antsy to jump start things.  I know there are downsides to delivering early, even just a couple of weeks, like difficulty breastfeeding, things possibly not being fully developed... etc.  What are the main risks/concerns?   I'm considering trying to jump start things at 38-39 weeks.  What are some safe methods?  I've seen some of you talk about EPO and RRLT, but I have no idea what they do.  I know there is nothing guaranteed to put you into labor, but I'm curious.

Bonus 3D pic from growth scan yesterday!  DS is on top at 39 weeks, DS2 is on bottom at 37.

I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.

  • Did your dr offer to strip your  membranes? That is one way that could possibly help.  There are no guarantees though. Do a board search (see the right side of the board) for some of the recent posts on this topic.

If you could point out some posts similar to mine that had helpful responses, that would be great!  I'd really appreciate it since you seem to know where they are. ;)

  • i would wait until 39 weeks if you absolutely cannot go past 40 (but i would get more info on this).  anyway nothing will help if your body isn't ready, but sex can help  and bouncing on a yoga ball supposedly haha

Same thing, I looked for similar posts to mine and didn't see any.  So if you could link some, that would be great and then I can just let this thread die.

  • Okay here's the short and sweet list of what I've learned. Sex with semen all up on the cervix...lol, (prostaglandins help soften cervix), EPO also because of softening cervix, walking a lot (gravity and pressure), oh and you and your baby being ready.

I would definitely like to wait until as late as possible.  I've got the yoga ball, and sex worked for us last time, so I'll probably try that.  I'm also curious about the EPO and RRLT I've seen people talking about.

Thanks for the helpful response. ;)

  • Um again, on the main page of the board, there is a useful tool where you can search for posts. Try it, it's kind of neat!

She did offer to strip them at 39 weeks.  So I will probably be taking her up on that offer!  I tried the search function, but only threads about being induced medically came up. :(

  • Here's one. You can tell we were already fed up with this question then:

Thanks, I'll go check it out.  I rarely have time to check any other boards than my BMBs.

  • Unless your body and the baby are ready, nothing will work.

Sex, walking, epo, rrl tea, nipple stimulation, pineapple are all options, but like I said, nothing will work until it's time.

Thank you for the link, I'll read it after I get DS in bed. :)  I realize people get sick of the same questions over and over.  I frequent the board daily, and check past threads before I post, but didn't realize this was a dead topic already.  I wish I had more time to keep up with what will annoy everyone. haha :P

  • Im with you, doc scheduled a c section for 40 weeks bc of gd and i cant be induced bc of vbac. Epo is supposed to ripen your cervix, rrlt streghthens your uterus. Ive been doing pelvic tilts, pelvic circles and bouncing on a medicine ball. Youtube has some videos about accupressure for inducing. Doc suggested sex. People also say lots of walking, castor oil, spicy food, bumpy road. There are a million owt. I would see if your doc is willing to do a membrane sweep.

  • I read something about EPO this morning that scared me a bit and made me rethink using it while pregnant. Apparently a study that they did on 54 women showed that EPO can break your water prematurely because it weakens the sack, but it doesn't start contractions. This could lead to having to induce labour. Don't know how true this is, but it just made me think that it may not be the best idea to use it.
  • My doc said RRLT and EPO only work if baby is ready. Same goes for other old wives tales. Stay away from castor oil. I can dehydrate you and put baby into distress. There is one method that my doc said does works, but would want it done in the hospital to be monitored. That's nipple stimulation. She said it involves pumping and can make contractions really intense. She also said she only recommends that choice if someone has gone over their due date. I think you should talk to your doctor next week about options.
  • This is basically a list of old wives tales, but I thought it was fun to read:
