Blocked tear duct

Hey mommas! Does anyone else's LO have a blocked year duct?

My poor baby girls eye is a gookie and tears all the time. Other than the drs recommendation of massaging the area and putting a warm compress multiple times a day...is there anything else I can do? I've heard breast milk in the eye?

Re: Blocked tear duct

  • DS had a clogged tear duct a few days after he was born.  The warm wash cloth and massage worked very well and we didn't need to try anything else.  It cleared up in 2-3 days.
  • Loading the player...
  • DS had it for weeks and no matter what I did, it never cleared until recently on its own. I know its frustrating. DS' eye was always gooped shut.

My dad is an ophthalmologist and looked at it when they had ds. He said that about 40% of babies have it. It generally will clear up on its own within several months to a year. If by that point it is still clogged, you can see a specialist to unclog it. He said the warm compressions and massaging will help but eventually it should clear on its own.

Hope it clears for you soon
  • Yes a drop of BM after you clean and massage it.

  • The breast milk worked really well for me in my LOs left eye, his right one was stubborn. Sometimes I think it just takes time, their systems are just starting to regulate. I think as log as you keep the area clean it'll be fine. If your LO seems to be in pain because of it I'd call your ped.

  • Thanks ladies! It's been over 2 weeks and I'm so diligent about it. I feel like a bad momma :(

It's not your fault. Both of my LOs had it but with DS1 it took several weeks and with DS2 just a few days.

  • I massaged around the area with a qtip, wiped clean with a warm wet cloth, and put breast milk in it. Cleared up in a few days. It's annoying but it will go away eventually. :)
  • My LO took a couple of weeks to clear up with just the message and warm compresses. Hope it clears up soon!!
  • My LO's eye took weeks to clear up, don't feel bad :)
  • It will clear up! DD had it in both eyes and eventually it cleared up in its own. Just keep cleaning it and maybe try the breast milk.
  • I am dealing with the same thing and it's a bit frustrating after almost 11 weeks now. Thank you for the post and the responses...glad it's still considered normal. :) although I want to kill dh when he tries to use his finger to wipe it...grrrr!

  • DS had this and I did the compressed, massage, breast milk... Nothing really worked. It has finally cleared up this week and LO is almost 4 months old.

  • DD is 8 weeks and hers is still bad in her left eye.  I also wipe it with a warm cloth and every now and then use breastmilk in the eye.
