When to take newborn baby out?

Hi,
So I've only posted on here a few times and never formally introduced myself. My name is Tiffany and I had a baby girl on September 9th! Anyway, my question is what are your thoughts on taking your newborn out to public places. I have taken her to the dr.'s and the hospital for lab work, but the reason I'm asking is because I am supposed to go to my SIL's bridal shower on Oct. 6th. Their family is pretty big and there will be at least 50 people there. A lot of family who I fear will want to hold the baby. She'll be close to 4 weeks old. Should I bring her, leave her home with my mother, or not go? Another dilemma is that I am exclusively breastfeeding, so my mom would have to give her breast milk in a bottle. I apoligize in advance if this subject has already been discussed.

Re: When to take newborn baby out?

  • I have no worries about taking my babies out since they're always in a sling when we're going to be around other people. After three kids, I have *never* had anyone ask me to hold the baby when they're in the sling.

I'd go to the shower, and wear the baby, and enjoy yourself. Nurse in the car before or after if you're still getting the hang of it.

  • I also forgot to mention that I'm a bridesmaid so I kind of feel obligated to go and DH has to work that day.
  • We've been taking her out since the day after she came home. Didn't take her any places with a lot of people holding we until 4 weeks

  • If I go and bring her I would definitely nurse. Just nervous about exposing her to germs to soon.

LO was born this past Friday and we've taken him out a few times. I haven't attempted the ergo yet, but he's in his car seat carrier and no one has bothered with him. We had some older people stop and tell us how cute he was last night at dinner, but they never bothered touching him.
We are going to a wedding in 3 weeks, he'll be going with us.

  • I really want to use the carrier but LO hates it :( I tried again today and she cried and cried. Mei Tai is what I have.

  • I'd wrap her. I haven't wrapped LO yet, but when she's in her car seat, people don't try to touch her. If they did, I have no problem saying "no hands please". I wouldn't want to leave LO in a car seat that long, though , so I'd try wrapping first.

  • I haven't tried a carrier. I have a baby borjn, but am thinking maybe a sling carrier or wrap may be better.

Yes, sling or wrap. Baby Bjorns are crap IMO.

  • Dd was born Tuesday at 9:30 pm. Friday at 9:30 am I took her with me to the county fair where I judge the photography competition. So... 2.5 days? Lol.

With dd2, she went with me to the nursing home almost every day from day 4/5 till day 10 to visit my dying grandpa.
