Opinion on a boy name

Although we are on team GREEN again with this pregnancy, my husband and I have tossed around the name Ryne for a boy. I also like Ryan but it is such a common name. My concern is that Ryne will constantly be mispronounced as Ryan especially when being said aloud.

For a girl we like Taylor but don't have a middle name picked out.

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions welcome!!

Re: Opinion on a boy name

  • I agree with your thoughts on Ryne, and I am not a big fan of it.  It kind of sounds like Ryan with a very heavy southern accent.  Is Ryan popular for little kids?  MH is a Ryan, but he's only the second one I've ever known, and I thought it was more of an "our generation" kind of name.  I only know one baby Ryan.

  • I like unusual names but I'm not a huge fan of ryne. I agree that he will be constantly correcting and spelling for ppl.

Not a fan at all. I wouldn't even be sure how to pronounce it. Like the Rhine river? Or Rine-y?

Ryan isn't that common, it's just normal. There aren't going to be ten Ryans in his kindergarten class. I'd be more pissed as a kid to have to constantly correct people about spelling/pronunciation than if I had one or two friends with the same name.

  • I agree that it would be tough for the kid to have to learn to correct people from a young age. I have a cousin named Dwan and I know she constantly wanted to change it to Dawn just so people would spell/say it right. (She didn't, but wanted to)
  • Just because a name is higher on the popularity lists doesn't mean it has a high frequency. In 2012 Ryan was the 26th most popular name.

California actually provided the exact numbers for kids born in 2012. It was slightly lower in that state at 29. Based on the number of kids born in the state that year with the name, it was only about 1 in every 200 boys born was named Ryan. That's very infrequent.
  • I thought it sounded somewhat familiar: baseball player Ryne Sandburg.

Entertainingly, the Facebook comments on this site seem to indicate there's a whole slew of Ryne's named after him. (Unfortunately, one mom responding says she's constantly correcting pronunciation, not just Ryan but Renee.)

  • It's actually a real name - it's the Irish spelling of Ryan. https://nameberry.com/babyname/Ryne
  • I'm not a fan, sorry. And if you consider Ryan (which I love), check the number of girls with that name, too. It's on the rise for girls (which KILLS me). I hate it when the good, strong boy names fall to the girls.

  • I would not chose it. I personally dislike "different" or "unique" names. However it is your child and if you love it and your SO likes it, go for it. I also don't know too many Ryans. I can think of maybe three and I only remember one in my classes throughout school.

  • Weird. I know a handful of guys name Ryne all in their 20's and 30's. I've lived in the north and south so it's not even a regional thing. I'll be the white knight and say I don't hate it! (Shockingly)

  • Not a fan either. Coming from someone with a u-neek name, please don't do that to your child. Even if it's a "real name" it still looks made up...at least for our culture it does.

  • It will always be butchered in pronunciation. I don't think Id saddle a person with that for a lifetime.

  • To me it's a girls name bec my brother dated a girl who spelled it that way but was pronounced ryan
  • I've known several guys named Ryne growing up, and never thought it was a weird or different name at all! I see nothing wrong with it, but if you're hesitant I'd say no. It's something he (and you) are going to have to live with for the rest of your lives... You want to be sure.

I thought of Ryne Sandburg too.  I'd don't hate or love it, but I will say it comes off as Ryan when spoken in conversation.

  • I don't like it. I'm not into unique names/spellings at all. I agree with PP's that it either sounds like Ryan with a very heavy accent or it reminds me of a fruit or pork rind.

Ryan is a great name and honestly I don't think I have ever met a baby Ryan.

But, as always, it's your child...your choice! If you like it go for it!

  • Ultimately it's your choice, but as a teacher who has seen students terribly upset by the mispronunciation of their name multiple times on the first day of school I wholeheartedly disagree with unique names. Your child's name won't make them unique, they'll be unique because they are their own person!

  • I would pronounce it like "rain".
  • My H's name is Ryan and his whole super southern family (and me when I've been drinking) pronounce it Ryne. So it just seems odd to me to use that pronunciation on purpose. Ryan, however, is a nice name and not that common for babies. And, as I have said before, I had a common name and I was no less special or unique for it. It's just not that big of a deal.
