Stay at Home Moms

Missing the extra $ :(

I'm having one of those weeks where I just want to go on vacation so bad but me staying home now doesn't allow for it. I've been home for 2 years. I have a 3yo and twin almost 2yo's. so I probably will stay home until they're in school.

Just a big struggle right now wanting all the extras. I feel like I'm always questioning was this the right thing now that we're living so tight.

  • I suppose I could but would hate giving up my nights/weekends!

I guess I just wonder if these battling feelings for us sahm's are normal?

  • Do you have anyone you can leave the kids with overnight? Maybe even just a night or two at home without the kids would be enough to recharge. And honestly, I'd you want to work (even FT) so that you can take vacations it's totally okay. I hate the thought that you should give up all non-necessities in order to SAH.

I work part time evenings to keep the extras like vacations, dinners out, and activities for the kids. I is well worth it. I work Wednesdays and sat nights currently from 6-11p waiting tables. Are Thursdays kind of rough? Sure. It's well worth one day of sleepiness and missing two hours of the kids being awake a week to be able to have a better quality of life free of stresses over money and living so tight we don't get to get out and enjoy life. Even if you found a minimum wage, retail gig for 10 hours a week you'd take home an extra $60 a week (roughly) after taxes. That's over 3,000 a year(and you could make up to triple that waiting tables)--plenty for some vacationing.

  • I work retail 5-11pm 2-3 nights a week, no weekends.  Some nights it's almost a "fun" break from the kids.

Alright, OP, a quick look at your posting history shows that AT LEAST since November 2011 you have had issues with you situation.  At some point, you need to either accept the sacrifices you have to make to stay home, or go back to work.  There are no quick fixes. And sure, while people have occasionalpangs of what if, most people don't have almost two years of angst and unhappiness.

Oooookay?! How do I look at posting history? Might be fun to look back at my issues.

And you can try having 3 babies in 18 months and see how easy it is ;)

Yes, I think battling these feelings are normal for SAHMs.  I think they're normal for everyone actually.  When you have some sort of savings goal there is often something you have to give up, so I don't really see it as different.  We have less "stuff" so we can have a parent at home.  Sometimes we miss the things we could be buying, but we'd both rather have this lifestyle than more things.

  • It's a battle for me daily on what the right thing to do is. There are good and bad days of course. And yes I usually only come here when I'm having a rough time so maybe all my posts are sad! Can't see them. Anyways. I like hearing from others in similar situations.

  • OP, what exactly are you looking for here? Were you just looking to vent or were you looking for advice? Your comments to amy#s kind of rubbed me the wrong way, seems like you are unhappy but are not looking to change the situation.

If you want all the extras then you should probably look for work, but it dosn't seem you want to do that because you don't want to give up your nights and weekends. That would have been my advice.

But do you have more good or bad days? If it's the latter you need to make some changes. If your happy 90% of the time than maybe just a fitting in some alone time will help.

Right. OP, if you are constantly posting vents then we are going to get the impression that you are just not happy with your life. We can only go by what you tell us.

  • I have to have my vacation once a year with my family and I also have to have a decent savings to feel comfortable about money.  That's why I choose to keep working part time.

  • I'd say its 50/50.

Those of you who work part time. What do you do? I have heard serving and retail. Thanks

    @dizzykates

I was a substitute teacher and would love to do it every now and then. My question is where does your kid go during the day? Do you have a family or friend that would take them on short notice?

I actually work FT right now, I just love you ladies :)
If I were subbing I would need childcare for the days I sub or my DH would take the day off (he's pretty flexible with his schedule).  I probably wouldn't do that until I could put DD in preschool or something though.

  • I teach music lessons and play a shit ton of weddings/corporate events

  • I work as an editor from home, but that is something I also did before I stayed at home. I also do some translation here and there, but I got those contacts when I was working, too. I'm working very part time now as a community managerfor DH's company, and once DD goes to preschool I'm thinking of offering my services to other companies. I also want to teach private lessons of Spanish when DD is not home.

  • I write content for a website. It's only 5-10 hours/week from home, mostly while DD1 is at preschool.

I mentioned I work in a restaurant. I have irl friends that work in gym daycare, teach dance or yoga, or work in their pre-baby field on a more limited basis like in accounting. Other ideas besides what's been already mentioned that accommodate night and/or weekend work are temp agencies, call centers, grocery store, hotels, hospitals, real estate offices, apartment complexes.
