Baby Names

Critique my lists please?

Not preggo but we are going to start TTC again in the next few months. We have a son Gavin Michael about to turn 2. Last name starts with a B and rhymes with Tyler. The lists are sort-of-ish in the order I like them.

For Girls:
Vera
Sylvia/Sylvie
Phoebe (but is it out since my LN starts with B?)
Stella
Amelia (popular but I don't know any IRL)
Fiona
Louisa
Nora
Alice
Margot nn Maggie

Boys:
Nolan
Simon
Oscar (is the -er ending a no-no with our -er last name?)
Elliott (weird if we are not religious?)
Owen
Miles/Milo (does the long "i" sound funny with our last name which rhymes with Tyler?)
Declan
Jude
Felix

Favorites? Do they work with Gavin? Suggestions?

  • From your girls' list, I like Vera, Stella, Louisa, Alice and Margot. Margot would be my favorite, except that I don't really "get" using Maggie as a NN (they're both two syllables, so it's not like it "saves" any time, and they're both already NNs for Margaret).

From your boys' list, I like Oscar, Declan, Miles, Jude and Felix. Oscar is probably my favorite, but I really like all of them.

I'm a religious person, and fairly "up" on religious things (even those not pertaining to my religion), but I don't know the religious connection with Elliot. I think of poet T.S. Eliot.

It's the meaning of Elliott -- it means "the lord is my god". I like the name Maggie but feel like it can't stand alone, Margaret is off the table for us. Thanks for your input :)

  • I was going to go down the list & rate each name - but I love all your names!!  I think my favorites to go w/Gavin are...

    Vera Sylvia/Sylvie, Stella, Nora

Owen, Jude, & Simon - the only names I don't like w/Gavin are Nolan & Milo

(Also - Elliott is not necessarily associated w/religion - honestly the first thing I think of is E.T. and Phoebe Buffet's ln started w/a B hehe)
How did I not think of Phoebe Buffet's last name? I'm still not sure I looove it with the B ln, but good point thanks!

Ah, gotcha. I wouldn't worry about the meaning. Almost nobody knows what names mean without looking them up, and lots of "mainstream" names have religious meanings (like Elizabeth, James, Abigail, etc.).

You might consider Magdelen/Magdelene/Magdelena NN Maggie.

ETA: Admittedly, Magdalene is a pretty religious name...

  • For Girls:

    Declan
    Jude
    Felix

Favorites? Do they work with Gavin? Suggestions?

First off... WE ARE!  PENN STATE
My favorites are: Vera, Sylvia, and Nora (favorite) and
    Simon, Milo, Owen, and Jude

I have a nephew named Gavin and I hear it a lot with his cousins so I think it sounds great with Leo, Pierce, and Reed.  Other names to consider: Noel, Seth, Dean, Rory? We were choosing between Nora and Isla for DD.  We ultimately went with Isla, but I still love Nora.

  • My DS #2 is named Gavin Miles so I know those work well together ;)
I love the names Nolan and Jude although I'm hearing Jude quite a bit lately. I also really like Declan.

Nora is the only girl name that jumps out at me from your list. I'm not really sure how I feel about it paired with Gavin though. Nothing wrong with them but it just seems like 2 different styles.
  • For Girls:
    Vera - like
    Sylvia/Sylvie - like
Phoebe (but is it out since my LN starts with B?) - like, but since your LN starts with a B then don't use it
    Stella - love
Amelia (popular but I don't know any IRL) - love, but it is very popular. How many children under 5 do you know?
    Fiona - it's okay
    Louisa - okay
    Nora - like
    Alice - like
Margot nn Maggie - it's ok

    Boys:
    Nolan - like
    Simon - love
Oscar (is the -er ending a no-no with our -er last name?) - it's ok
Elliott (weird if we are not religious?) - love and I don't see it as a religious name
    Owen - like
Miles/Milo (does the long "i" sound funny with our last name which rhymes with Tyler?) - LOVE Miles
    Declan - dislike
    Jude - love
    Felix - love

My favorites of your girls are Sylvia/Sylvie (prefer Sylvie), Amelia, Louisa, Nora, Alice, Margot/Maggie.

My favorites of your boys are Miles/Milo, Jude and Felix.  I love Oscar, but I think "Oscar Byler" sounds too sing-songy.  I love Simon and Owen, but I feel dislike that they have a similar sound to Gavin.

  • Love love love Alice and Sylvie. Both are great names that are underused. If I didnt have a close friend with the name Alice, it would be one of my daughter's names.

I also think Jude is a great name, it's been on our boy list both times.
  • Thanks everyone :)
