military moms

any military moms wanna vent on the "care " weve been recieving?

its getting old, i see a diff OB everytime, im 38 weeks and i have no idea which doctor will deliver my baby.

& the active duty pregnant COL. i saw last time doesnt want put me on a profile, so im still working 9 hours a day at 38 weeks.

& by now we should be seeing OB weekly? not here still every other week till baby comes. and they rush thru apts... maybe just bc im at a busy base idk.

end rant

Re: military moms

  • I was a military spouse for a while, so I get you, but this doesn't sound much different from my experience now without the military care.

There are 3+ docs that work in my OB office, and it's basically a gamble as to which doc will be on call when I go into labor. I have seen all 3, but there are some others from another office location that could POSSIBLY be the only docs available at that time.

Although I have a desk job and not sure what you do, I will also most likely still be working full days when I'm 38 weeks.

My appts are only MAYBE 5 mins long. Wam bam you're done. If they thought you warranted being seen weekly, I'm sure they would. I think I'd be ok with bi-weekly still.

Just trying to add some perspective...

  • Sorry, no complaints here, either. With either pregnancy. With DD, OB/MW care was at a military treatment facility and I was assigned to a team of 3 or 4. Sometimes the appts were with someone from a different team. No big deal. We're stationed in Germany this time and I'm at a German treatment facility and it's the same deal. Whoever is around and has open appts takes the patient. The one constant at both was that it was the same MW whenever I had a MW appt. the appts have been slightly longer here in Germany but they are monitoring baby more closely because I recently fell down the stairs.

I can't say anything about still working at 38 weeks because I'm a SAHM but I know plenty of women who work until the day they go into labor (40+/- weeks)

  • thanks all, i suppose every base is different, but baby is healthy so i shouldnt really be complaining :) just needed to vent
  • My situation is a little different. I see civilan doctors because the closest MTF is 70 miles away.  I have had great care.  Same thing with DS last time.  I go to one OB (the head of L&D at one of the hospitals) and see his DNP (doctor nurse practitioner) for my appointments.  If there were any complications I would see the OB directly.

  • What branch are you? You should automatically receive a profile when you become pregnant and 40 hour work weeks start at 28 weeks....I think. This is standard by regulation, at least in the army. Unless you have a medical need for less, you work up until labor. The rest sounds like standard care, even at my civilian doc.
  • I'm no help either because our closest base is over 2 1/2 hrs away, so I see my civilian OB and had no complaints.

Though, most of us have no idea who will deliver our babies. It's a gamble on who will be on call or on rotation that day.

  • good to know, i guess the good thing is about seeing a diff OB everytime i know them all, ill know the one who does end up delivering, crossing my fingers H makes it home from deployment in time!
  • Are you in the military or just DH?
  • DH and i are both active duty air force. im not too upset with the care they have been giving, im just a FTM and i worry lol
  • I go on post and I've had 6 week appointments up until 32 weeks so my next one is today at 36 then at 38 39 & 40 but I haven't been to happy with midwife, we don't get an actual OB unless we are high risk, I really wanted to go off post but my MIL made a huge deal so I stayed on post which I've regretted the whole time, we have another hospital much closer to our house but can't go there because I stayed on prime... Anyway I should have at least switched midwives but I loved her nurse who I spent most of the time with any way but she quit a couple weeks ago. I guess I just had higher expectations as a FTM and was jealous of the care my friends were getting off post. I see my doc just long enough for her to listen to my babies heart beat and ask if I have questions. I'm not a fan of my care thus far but it could just be my doc, I'm excited she called out sick today and I get to see someone else !
  • There's no ob on base here so I go off base and see the only MFM around. I either see him or his nurse practitioner and there's only been one time the whole pregnancy that they had to push me later in the day because he was at the hospital. Sometimes I wait awhile and sometimes I'm in and out so quickly I get annoyed at having to drive 45 minutes there but I don't expect more than hearing the baby on the Doppler and them answering any questions I have. The biggest annoyance I've had is a minor one and that's that I have to go on base for any lab work instead of using the in house lab at the ob.

  • My only problem with my doc is that when I ask questions she either tells me she will call me with an answer or just tell me not to worry about it and doesn't explain much of anything and she has notecards for everything I guess I just wanted something a little more personal or expected something a little more personal... Like I said though I'm a FTM so my expectations may have been a little high

My annoyance is is similar and totally minor.  My OB does not do u/s in the office.  I have to go to a hopsital to get them done.  The annoying part is that I had to go a different hospital than the one i am delivering at.  Not a big deal since they are both the same drive time, just annoying.
