Which bottle to drop next?

It’s taken a few weeks but we’ve been slowly weaning DD from BM and bottles during the day.  I’m weaned from the pump but I still BF mornings, nights, and weekends.

Anyway, she’s pretty much always got 3 (4 oz) bottles at the sitters.  She gets dropped off at the sitters by 6 am and I pick her up at 5 pm, so she’s there for a looong time.

We started a few weeks ago by replacing her “lunch time” bottle with a 4 oz sippy of WCM.  At first she only would take a few sips.  But now it varies from a few sips to 2-3 oz.  I don’t think she’s ever finished it.  She still got 2 4oz bottles of diluted milk (BM / WCM mixture).  One in the mid-morning (a little before her a.m. nap) and the other in the afternoon (when she woke from her afternoon nap and before her afternoon snack).

We were changing the ratio of BM:WCM until now we’re finally all WCM in the bottles.  She’s been doing the WCM bottles for about 2 weeks.  I’m ready to swap out another bottle but I’m not sure which I should do next?  The morning or the afternoon?  I’m thinking of dropping one, then waiting a week before we drop the second.  I’m also not sure if once dropped I should replace both with sippies or just replace one with a sippy?  She’s still BFing about 3 times on days that I work.  And on weekends we’ve been BFing on demand.

It’s hard for me to know which bottle she is more attached to since I never give her bottles.

EDD 10/15/16
At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

Re: Which bottle to drop next?

  • Maybe ask the sitters which bottle she seems hungrier for? And does the sitter have any WCM that she could maybe give her if she seemed like she needed it, or do you have to provide it all? Ours has milk for the other kids anyway (she provides meals if you want them, but they're not exactly health food).

I had been sending DS to daycare with 2, 4 to 5 oz bottles of BM and one meal of table food. (I think he usually eats a snack there, too.) We feed him breakfast at home. He is usually at daycare from about 9:30 to 4:30. I started sending him with just 1 bottle of BM and his meal a couple of days ago. He always took the second bottle later in the afternoon anyway (around 5-6 PM-- I get home at 6:30 or 6:45), and lately he hadn't even been drinking it most days. So either my mom or DH could potentially just give him more food or WCM or frozen BM if he seemed super hungry and I wasn't home yet.

  • We dropped the morning one, he is down to just one night time bottle and when he finishes this box of formula, we will be done with bottles completely!

I choose the morning one because he really didn't have the appetite for it, he preferred to eat an actual breakfast.  So I agree with the PP, check with the sitter to see what she is hungrier for and drop the other one.

Yeh.  I plan to talk with my sitter this weekend about it (she's on vaca this week) and see what she thinks.  My sitter is a family member (my cousin) so I provide ALL the food, milk, snacks, etc.  DD has a few shelves in a cabinet there where I leave extra snacks and such.  But I pretty much pack breakfast, lunch, snacks, bottles, and sippies, every day.  I'm sure I can leave a half gallon of WCM in her fridge and she wouldn't mind.  Which is probably a good idea espchally as we transition and figure out how much she wants and when.

My cousin is pretty flexible.  My DD is the only kid she watches and her kids are in school most of the day.  She's pretty much told me that she'll do whatever I ask her to do.  So, I sometimes feel weird asking her stuff like this because it makes me feel like I don't know my own kid!  But she used to work at day care centers (was even a director at one point), so she has alot of experience with taking care of kids (espchally other people's kids).  So I usually try to phrase things like "how have you seen others do x,y,z" or something like that.  She rarely gives me any unsolisited advise - which is nice.  But sometime what I need is some good advise.
