Car recommendations for tall parents

Hi ladies,
We only have one baby so far, but are hopefully on the way to 2u2 soon. We currently have a Corolla, and when we drive we have to have the driver's seat all the way back because DH and I are both tall (5'10"), so the infant seat is in the rear passenger seat. Our other vehicle is an old truck that is probably going to bite the dust soon, and we are thinking about replacing it with a vehicle that could hold 2+ car seats in the back seat with enough space for us to drive comfortably and safely, and gets good gas mileage. I'm thinking some sort of station wagon would work, but I figured you all would be able to give me real-life experience advice to help me out.

So, what is your recommendation?

TIA!

Re: Car recommendations for tall parents

  • How many children do you want? If you want more than 2, it might be a good idea to skip the new car idea and go straight to looking at minivans and suvs.

My DH is 6'2", and we have a Chevy Malibu. We have our DD in a rear facing Britax Roundabout 55  behind the driver's side. Our DS is in a Graco Snugride 30 behind the passenger seat. DH can move the driver's seat back far enough to drive comfortably (same position as always), and he has enough leg room (though not quite as much as before) in the passenger seat.

Do you have your convertible car seat yet? If so, I recommend taking both of your seats when car shopping and trying them out in vehicles that you like. :)

  • My friend's parents are both tall (he is 6'2" and she is 5'9").  They just got the new Prius V (the bigger Prius).  They can easily take all 3 grandchildren in it (pretty sure that entails 2 booster seats and one carseat).  Hope that helps.  Previous poster's idea about bringing car seats shopping is a good one.

We have a Ford Escape and have had to turn my 20 month old FF when we moved her to the side to accommodate little sister's carrier because her carseat won't fit behind our seats RF without our knees hitting the dash. We test drove a new Ford Explorer and it was super roomy, both carseats could RF and dh and I weren't in danger of the dash bashing in our knees in the event of a wreck. We're seriously considering trading in our Escape, especially since the Explorer has third row seating, which will be handy if we have a third. The gas mileage isn't GREAT, but it's not bad for an SUV, especially if you opt for the 4 cylinder instead of the V6.

  • Thanks for the input! We test drove a Prius the other day, and found we could put our infant seat comfortably behind the driver seat. (We don't have a convertible car seat yet, but will probably get one soon.)

  • I would highly recommend a vw passat. Withthe seats almost all the way back, we can fit rf seats.

  • We have a 2013 CRV and it is exceptionally roomy. DH is 6'3 and can easily fit in any seat in the car, and there is enough room in the tail for our huge Graco stroller and some groceries. The bonus that sold us is 3 latch systems across the back seats, which means that there is potential for three carseats if you need it!

Good luck with the car shopping, it took us months to find something that worked for us.
  • My hubby is 6'-6" ad the only car that worked for us was the gmc Acadia.

  • Hubby is 6'6" and owns a Dodge Caliber.  We can't put the infant seat behind him (because his seat is all the way back) but now that our DS is FF once LO arrives he will move behind dad and the infant behind the passenger side.  I'm tall but not tall enough to be overly cramped.  We're going to have to live with this till we can upgrade his or my (Kia) to a mini van.  I think we are done after 2 but we will need the room for storage and hauling all the kids sports junk later on in life.

  • We have a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder-hubby is 6'4" and I'm 5'9" and it's great.  We love that we have a third row for down the line as our family grows :)

  • Chrysler Pacifica! DH is 6'2" and it has extra leg room up front even for him! Captains seats in the back and a 3rd row bench that folds down so if you only have 2 car seats in the middle you can haul a double stroller, a weeks worth of groceries and then some! I love it, although the latest model is 2007. If you're wanting something newer it's not for you. Lol
  • I'm 5 foot 9 my husband is 6 foot 2. We are only having two kids so when I found out I was pregnant with the second we got a Nissan Murano. It is a smaller SUV, but it is good for tall people with one or two kids.
