Trying to Get Pregnant

Cyst question

ok, I may be opening myself up to a whole lot of flames with this question. I'm a newb, and I hope that entitles me to one dose of stupid without being chased out by the villiagers with flaming torches.

I have never had an ovarian cyst, nor have I ever had any reason to believe I have one, until this cycle. It may just be dr. google making me worried about something that is completely irrational. I have been having a near constant dull ache in and down from my right hip bone for a few days now. It turns in to a sharp pain at certain points (if I cough, sneeze, during BD-ing). I have been very bloated. When the pain turns sharp it is pretty intense, but it is gone just as quickly as it came. I described this to a friend who is also TTC-ing and she said that this sounds like when she had a cyst before it ruptured.

H suggested maybe it's a UTI or Kidney stone or something like that, but I have had both of those and this is something different. I'm thinking of going to a doctor, but am not one to jump the gun and run in for every little ache and pain. Obviously if it gets worse, or continues for long, I will. I was just wondering if anyone who has had cysts could tell me if this sounds like a cyst is a likely culprit.

Thank you!

Re: Cyst question

  • I have had several ovarian cysts. Unfortunately, there's really no way for someone else to definitively tell you what you're feeling. However, that does sound quite a bit like how I would describe the pain. A constant ache, with sharp pulls of pain with things like standing up, coughing, etc. It certainly wouldn't hurt to go see your doctor and get it checked out. A ruptured cyst is no fun.

I know nobody can net-diagnose me, just kind of looking to see if this is what others experienced. And you described it exactly. "pulls of pain" is pretty accurate. It's a pulling sharp pain sensation, and it is when I stand up, or I guess really just jostle my midsection. Is a cyst doctor worthy, or do they just kind of go away?
  • It depends. I know you can develop cysts and never know about them- your body just reabsorbs them. I've had 3 that have all painfully ruptured. The first time I was a teenager and ended up crying and puking in a clinic, thinking it was my appendix. The other two times I went to the doctor for ultrasounds to confirm that it was a cyst and not something else. My mom had 2 huge cysts surgically removed.

Perhaps you could call your doctor's office and talk to a nurse? They would better be able to tell you what procedure would be if you did go in. Good luck and I hope the pain dissipates quickly!

  • I had a cyst about 3 months ago with very similar symptoms.  I went to the ER, I had a temp too so we were worried about appendicitis.  They figured out it was a cyst and gave me some high dose tylenol.  They told me to follow up with my OB/GYN and that was that.  It went away after about a week.  I went and saw my OB/GYN and she said there was nothing else they could do about it but to watch it and make sure if it ruptured I had it taken care of.  She told me if it ruptures, you'll know.  Luckily, mine didn't but it wasn't a fun few days that's for sure.  I would recommend calling your Dr. and just giving them a heads up and asking them what they recommend, coming in or waiting it out.
She also told me that most women have a cyst at some point in their life, some of them just aren't painful.
    Hope you feel better soon!

  • It sounds pretty cyst-like to me. Like PP said, I'd recommend having a doctor check it out. You really don't want to go through a cyst rupturing if you can avoid it. It feels absolutely awful!! Even if they just keep an eye on it, you'll at least know what's going on with your body.
  • Thanks ladies. I will give my gyn the dreaded call. Shit. For real, first real cycle TTC and I think I have my first cyst ever, which I'm assuming probably benches me? You don't ovulate with a cyst do you? I feel like such an ignoramus, I have zero ideas about cysts and what they do
  • I had similar dull/sharp twinges pains a few cycles ago for about 5 days, and then one morning I woke up at 6AM with a very distinct stabbing-like pain that lasted for about 30 minutes on the same side. I believe it was a cyst rupturing (never had this happen before), it was pretty intense but I took some tylenol and went back to bed and woke up and all the pain was gone for the rest of that cycle. Following that cycle I had an extremely light period. I assume it was also a cyst that ruptured on its own? I have a pretty high tolerance for pain but I could see how some people would find it really painful. If I were to do it again, I'd go to the doctor, just to be sure. Good luck!

  • It's a good idea to give your doctor a call like you mentioned. Best to just get it resolved so you can move forward with your TTC and not have to worry about it :) good luck!

  • I've had many cysts. Mine don't give me too much warning until they rupture sometimes i get the dull achy but no sharp pain until they rupture and I get ridiculously intense pain with some. Anyway listen to your body, make a doctors appt if you think its appropriate

  • I know of pregnant women who have cysts so no, you don't have to stop trying simply because you have a cyst. I had a cyst that formed when I ovulated a few months back; it ruptured and was incredibly painful. Like PP suggested, I think you should call your dr's office and talk to a nurse and then see if an appointment is needed.

  • It sounds very similar to what I experienced with my cyst. I also had mine right when we were getting ready to TTC. We ended up benched for 2 1/2 months while it resolved, but that's better than having it rupture. I'd call them & see what they say. Good luck & hopefully it's nothing.

  • Def see a dr. I had a cyst once and it felt like a strong pressure if I would sit down or BD. They can subside on their own but get it checked out. You'd know if you had a UTI!
