Cereal

Hey guys. Last week, our doctor said I should start feeding DD rice cereal to "beef her up a bit", so I finally started her on it last Thursday. It's still pretty watery (one part cereal, 4 parts formula). But she hates the spoon! Right now I feed her just once a day. She will reluctantly try it for only a minute but mostly I'm sure she thinks I'm crazy. Once she has had enough, I put the rest into her bottle and she eats it just fine.

I am confused as to at what point I should try other stuff... I have a banana here so I was wondering if it is a good idea to mash it up, and would doing so help her realize the spoon is not such an evil thing. Or should I just stick with the cereal for now? Or try and thicken it up? I'm also scared of her choking.

I am not enjoying this transition. I had this problem when we started formula... I just get so overwhelmed if I am doing the right thing or not, lol.

Re: Cereal

  • From what I have read rice cereal doesn't have much of a taste, given you are giving her so little of it, maybe she is wondering why you are spoon feeding her BM? :)  I think you have definitely waited long enough to introduce a new food so go ahead and give her some banana.

  • I make the oatmeal cereal thicker because I didn't see the point in spoon feeding her milk. I did give her a banana once and she didn't like it. I think the flavor was too powerful for her first food (just my opinion). Last night we did green beans and she loved them! MIL said "all kids hate green beans". Not my kid!

  • Ok I will try it... wish us luck, lol. ;)
  • Haha, well she didn't eat too much of it, but she did like it and lunged for the spoon after the first taste. If she ate only about a tablespoon, should I also give her some cereal tonight (I'll try thickening it up a little more)? Or would you still stick to one thing a day for now?

It's surprising to me that your ped would tell you to "beef her up".  At this point, most of their nutrition and calories are coming from breastmilk or formula.  Chewing and swallowing is a developmental milestone - so eating solids now is a way to help them achieve this milestone.  Yes, they get a little extra from solids, but not enough to "beef up" IMO.
Yes, honestly it kind of bothered me when she said it. I was originally waiting until around 6 months to start anything... being a FTM with no prior child exp whatsoever, I really am trying to make the right decisions for her and its really hard. Not to mention over the weekend I suddenly had several comments from friends/family saying, "She's so small!", "She's so light!" and now its just getting to me. I know her weight has probably levelled off a bit since she has become VERY active in the last month, and she is long.

I don't want to push her into a milestone she isn't ready for yet, so I am ok feeding her something different just once a day. I'm glad she liked the banana though, that was a relief, even if she didn't eat too much of it. She is still very dependent on the formula. I do agree with you, from how little of it she is eating I don't see how it will make a difference.

My LO has been on solids since 4 months, doctors orders.  He took to it pretty well right away.  I have read online that if they don't take to the spoon, you can feed them with your finger to transition better.  My doctor said after a week on oatmeal or rice cereal we could move on to a banana, but to use the 4 day rule.  At this point he has had bananas, apples, pears, carrot (his fav), butternut squash, acorn squash and peas (which he HATES).  I agree with other posts saying to make it thicker, as I had that issue with mine.  He likes everything thick so I add cereal to everything.  Don't get overwhelmed.  Make it fun!  I love getting Silas excited to eat.  Now he knows whats coming and he loves it!
