Re: so to dye my hair or not

  • A friend of mine (and some internet research) recommeded using Henna dye since it lacks most of the dangerous chemicals.

  • Mine needs it SO badly too - I was actually about to make an appointment when we found out! Ill be waiting until after the first tri tho - I'm a nervous nelly and would rather be safe than sorry!
  • Just like anything else during pregnancy, it's a personal choice. If you;re going to dye your hair, it's recommended to wait until after 1st tri. If you're going to DIY, look for a product that is ammonia free and low in PPD (paraphenylenediamine). Permanent hair dyes usually contain higher amounts of PPD. Might be easier to just go to your hair stylist and ask them if they have any preg-safe hair dyes.

Here's a list of pretty safe hair dyes:

I have too much time on my hands when I wake up at 5am..

  • Lucky for me I have 1 grey hair right in front of my head, I just yank it out lmao. And I stopped dying my hair last christmas so i'm rocking the "ombre" look.. or as we use to call it when I was growing up, really bad roots haha. I have like 5 inches of root growth. whatevs.

  • i'd do it. just do it in a well ventilated area.
  • I still dye mines, but I go to an aveda salon and there products tend to have WAY less chemicals then your generic salons.

  • My OB said as opposed to using complete dye all over, to get highlights that use foiling. The solution they paint on only touches the foil, not your scalp. I did this after my first tri with my last pregnancy.
  • Well at 3 am or so this morning ( night shifter and couldn't sleep) after lots of reading up on it I just did it .... I am all blonde again and maybe people won't think my 8 year old is my grandkid any more.... From what I read there is minimal risk to the baby.... I think it will make me feel better about myself if I can now just get past how bad my hair still smells with this extra sensitive nose I have now!!!

  • Go for it! I'm a hairstylist and am breathing in and touching hair dye 8hours a day! All professional hair color these days are made with top ingredients and are perfectly safe to use! I'd stay away from over the counter dyes as well as henna! Henna is a b*%^# to get out if you ever want professional hair color again! Your stylist would kill you hahaha
  • I got my hair highlighted the same day I got my BFP.

I'd go for salon over box dye in first tri, at least.

  • I need a perm sooooo bad, but when I asked my doc he laughed at me and said if it's needed that bad it can wait until after the first tri. So I'm counting down the next 6 weeks :/

I do believe that perms have more chemicals than dyes tho so maybe that's why he made a bigger deal about it?
  • Yeah I'd wait on perms! They have way more crazy chemicals then your typical professional hair color! The perm solution is actually going in and changing the bonds and make up of your hair! Plus the smell is super strong and it has to sit directly on your scalp for a longer amount of time! ;) good luck with the 6 weeks wait! ;)
  • Don't do any henna type - the "natural" ingredients do not tend to be regulated and I was warned against them. I agree with the Aveda post - it's where I go - but use semi-permanent because there is no ammonia and something else... can't remember. I'm waiting til 12 weeks and using stupid hair touch up crap in the meantime. If anything ever went wrong, this peace of mind in knowing I did not inhale fumes, etc. is worth looking like an ass for a few more weeks. I know ppl do it all the time - but we've tried too long for this. Good luck.

  • Perms = nope.

  • My best friend is a professional hair dresser and she said it is more than fine to dye your hair.  I chose to wait until second trimester, but that's a personal choice.  If you do dye, she said avoid bleach for blonds because your scalp is so much more sensitive and it will burn like a bitch and become irritated.  Other than that, get rid of that grey!

  • I used that Olia color. Seemed less harsh. I wasn't a fan bc my hair felt a little oily but at least I was grey free.
  • It is my understanding that they're aren't any good studies that show that hair dye is dangerous to pregnant women.  If you want to dye your hair, go for it!
