Mixing Meds? Gonal F and Menopur

I used Gonal F 900 Pen and 2 Menopur vials for IVF #1. I am now using the same meds for IVF #2 (higher dose of Gonal) and someone mentioned mixing the meds.

Last night I mentioned this to DH after he had already mixed the Menopur and it was in the syringe. He pulled down the syringe and just injected the Gonal F from the pen straight into the syringe.

Is it okay to mix Gonal F and Menopur? What does your RE say about this? Does anyone else mix it straight up in the syringe? It seemed to go very well. The shot didn't burn and it was nice only taking one shot.

With my first RE ,it was suggested to me. It worked. She is 3 now. This new staff almost fainted when I asked the nurses. Lol... So, I didn't do it last month. I am not sure how you want to do it. Just know that it didn't hurt my cycle.

Thats good to know that it worked with your DD. I'm just trying to figure out if its okay to do? I mean its the same amount of meds going into me. I know one person doing it and she said her RE recommended it. Mine didn't mention anything but DH decided to take it upon himself. I watched the Gonal go into the Menopur syringe and it worked perfectly.

YES! Since I am doing B2B IVFs I figured I need to make this easier on myself. I just wanna make sure other people are doing this as well! The menopur didn't burn when it was mixed with the Gonal.

I see my RE tomorrow and I'm going to ask about it. I figured that they wanted to space the drugs to maintain a certain level in my system... But I'm all for not doing 2 injections per day if it gets the same results

I haven't started yet, but I've been instructed to mix Follistim & Menopur and do one injection with the two meds mixed. Good luck!

My first clinic encouraged me to mix but the second said no way. I really think it doesn't matter but I was committed to following her instructions to the T.

My RE suggested mixing. If you ever have overfill in your gonal or follistim pen, mixing it in the syringe is the best way to go, otherwise you will be sticking yourself a lot more. I had saved up 5 vials with overfill because I was terrified to mix it with the menopur.

Mixing GONAL-f Pen and Menopur

See instructions for preparing the GONAL-f pen.
Inject the desired dose of Gonal-f into a bottle of Menopur and swirl gently to mix.
Remove needle, put your Gonal-f pen back together and store in refrigerator.
Open one vial of fluid that is in the Menopur package.
Using a 3 cc (ml) 1 ½” 22G syringe, withdraw ½ cc/mL of fluid and gently inject the fluid into the Menopur / Gonal-f mixture.
Remove all the mixture using the same syringe.
Before changing needle tip, pull back on plunger to assure no medication is being wasted.
Remove the 1 ½ 22 G needle from the syringe and replace with a ½” 27G needle.
Remove any air bubbles. Rush up on plunger until one drop of med comes out of the needle tip.
You are now ready to inject. Follow instructions for the subcutaneous injection technique.

Theres other Med info on there. But it looks like they can be mixed! GOOD!

I was switched from follistim to bravelle because it was tested on being mixed with menopur (since they are made by the same company) and the follistim wasn't.

I also mix Bravelle and Menopur. My RE instructed me to mix them into one syringe but not to mix any others with it.

I was instructed to mix. Related topic - after reading every post here & all the similar threads on Bump frankly, I'm getting more and more irritated by the fact that every RE tells their patients something different!! Maybe I'm being too naive here but are there no "standards" to any of this? Do they not read the same books, papers, attend the same ART related conferences? I mean, how the heck is any one of us supposed to judge the validity of any one RE's instruction if they all recommend something different! Arrrg!

@cachoque I know, it is crazy to see all the ways to go about this process! I guess the only thing that doesn't drive me crazy about all the differences is that unfortunately, the same protocol or guidelines will not work for every patient. You, as a patient, just have to find the RE you are comfortable with, do some research on your own, and come up with the best plan for you moving forward.

I mix in the syringe. Injecting the Follistim into the menopur vial doesnt work for me. I always end up with a mess and it blowing back out. The nurse said something about the vacuum in the vial.

In the syringe is pretty easy though. Just mix your menopur as directed and draw up, remove the q cap and inject the follistim/gonal in to the syringe before replacing the needle.

It is crazy.. my RE says its ok to do the shots subcutaneous and the FDA only approved it for IM in higher BMIs- so I insist on doing IM shots. I told him if it makes only half of a percent differences it's too much to risk. I just hate how much I feel responsible to read to make sure there are no short cuts lowering my chances.

My RE instructed me to mix - I've been doing 1 vial Menopur and 150ml of Gonal-F (vial, not the pen). I constituted the entire vial of Gonal-F, draw up the 150ml, inject it directly into the Menopur powder, gently swirl, add 1cc of the sodium chloride solution to the Menopur vial, swirl again, and do just one shot of it sub-c. Much easier than doing two separate injections every night!

I don't mix. I would just worry too much about some rare.chemical reaction or something. I stab myself three times a day, three separate meds. My stomach flab hates me lol

So I talked to my RE about mixing today and his response was "the problem with mixing is your body then hits peaks and valleys in respect to the hormone levels" and he said that he wants "to keep a more consistent level"... So no mixing for me

So I asked my RE today. He said exactly what you wrote here. He said there are no scientific studies of mixing Gonal F and Menopur. He said Bravelle and Menopur were in the study and its fine to mix those. My RE is a big science guy and reads up on tons of studies so he said since it hasn't been studied not to do it. Oh well, did my 2 shots tonight. Boo Hoo

cachoque Yes, this is annoying that REs say different things. The person who suggested me to fix the 2 said her RE says its fine to do and encourages it while mine is now saying not to because it hasn't been tested. There really should be some type of standard. I found those mixing instructions on a REs website. Oh well just another annoying thing about IF.
