We've been using it for a few months and mostly keep it at the setting that disengages the pedals but lets him rest his feet on them. He likes to go around the neighborhood on it but definitely still needs to be pushed. However, we bring it in the house sometimes and let him try to pedal around and he's starting to see the relationship but, again, nowhere near ready to actually go anywhere.
I should also mention, he jussssst reaches the pedals comfortably now and he's a really tall kid (37.5 inches at 18 months) but there are drop down foot rests on this thing until you can get there. Overall, I've really liked the thing and would definitely recommend it. Especially for my giant kid, I like things that look like he'll actually be able to use them for awhile. I bought a groupon style deal for Little Tikes that got me $50 for $20 so it made it a little more reasonable, too.
Do you mean a proper tricycle or one with a handle on it that you can push (if necessary)?
DH is really into bikes and so we didn't go that route as it is more difficult to learn to balance once you come off a tricycle/stabilisers. We opted for a balance bike instead.
He loves it and can ride it around our driveway, but his legs are not quite long enough for him to want to venture any further with it just yet. He is getting there quickly though!
Wow, that is really interesting about the balance issues.. I wouldn't have guessed that, but it makes total sense! The little boy next door to us is almost 3 and he has one of these and loves it. I'm guessing we'll get DS one at some point, but I think he's too small for it now.. he's a very short kid.

Yeah I was kinda leaning towards the bicycle too... but thought the tricycle might have a wider base and be better to begin with. We wanted to get him a battery operated quad, but I don't want to encourage him to avoid excercise early on...although it would be for use in the park only so... we'll see.
I think he would actually pick up pedalling reasonably quick so I'm still leaning towards baby powered transport lol.
Re: Pedal tricycle - - anyone using one already?
