Multiples

Activity Level

How active have you been / were you during your multiples pregnancy? We're pretty active folks (and I'm overweight to begin with so I want to keep weight gain to the lower end of what my OB recommends - I saw the RE yesterday and see my OB next week): hiking on the weekends, I walk/jog (elliptical at the gym) on the weeknights.

So were you able to remain active? I don't plan to run anymore (and really my running was more like run to the next house, and then walk a mile, then run 1/2 a block), but would like to keep active as long as I can...is this possible? Of course given that I remain healthy throughout the pregnancy.

Re: Activity Level

  • I had a rather healthy and uneventful multiple pregnancy.  I had extreme morning sickness up until about 16 weeks, but after that I was up and about up until delivery at 37w6d.   I was not so much active in the sense of going for walks or working out, however, I continued to work up until 34w5d and had a very active 2 yr old to chase around all the time :)  I am 5 4' and was 128lbs pre pregnancy.

  • My experience may well end up being completely different than yours, but I have not been able to be active at all for this entire pregnancy. And so far, at 29 weeks, my activity restrictions have helped keep them cooking.

We did ivf, and at first my ovaries were swollen so large, I wasn't able to be very active. Then I was really sick, and placed on pelvic rest for placenta previa. At 16 weeks, my cervix started to shorten due to contractions, and I've been on limited activity since then. I have been able to continue working at my desk job, but I can't stand for long or walk very far.

This has just been my experience, so hopefully it will be easier for you.

  • I'm the least active right now than ever in my adult life (and probably compared to younger days too).  I remember going for a 4-mile run at the beginning of my IVF cycle. Then my ovaries got so big that I really couldn't do much physical activity. Soon after I felt they returned to normal size, I got some m/s and bleeding off and on for a good month or so. Once the bleeding stopped, my OB advised me to swim, walk, and use the stationary bike for my exercise.

I do swim a couple of times per week and walk my dog, and my job has me on my feet a decent amount. But that's really it for me right now. My feet and ankles are too swollen to make longer walks and biking comfortable.

I hope you get to stay as active as you want to during your pregnancy!

  •  I was very active (elliptical, spinning, boot camp classes 4-5x a week) up until week 22, when the BH contractions started non-stop, and never stopped until my girls arrived at 29 weeks. We constantly asked the docs if it was okay to continue my activity level, and they not only said yes -- they encouraged it. It absolutely helped with any stiffness or aches and pains that started to pop up -- I was significantly more uncomfortable once I wasn't allowed to exercise regularly anymore!

  • I did prenatal yoga and walked until the end of the second trimester. Prenatal yoga I did the whole way through. BUT, I was completely exhausted first and third tri so didn't do much else but work, eat and sleep (when possible). I thought I would be more active than I ended up being capable. Carrying two babies is very hard work.

  • I walked 3-3.5 miles 4-5 times a week until about 28 weeks and then dropped it down to about 2-2.5. I also swam laps some days to mix it up. I haven't done much in the past 2 weeks or so and haven't walked any further than half a mile on a few weeks. My stomach feels too heavy to walk that far and the swelling started in the past couple of weeks. My dr suggested a 31-50 lb weight gain based on my pre-pregnancy weight. I've gained 24 so far and haven't had any complications. Not even anemia. I definitely think staying active has helped prevent too many aches and pains. I've really only had plantar fasciitis in one foot. No back pain and some hip pain at night.
  • Thanks ladies for all you input. I've graduated to my regular OB and will see her on Tuesday when I'll be 8 weeks. I'm on my feet a significant amount about 2-3 days/week for work, but the rest of the week I'm pretty much at my desk. And I am so incredibly exhausted by the end of the day and by the time I get my 2 year old to bed I'm pooped, but I'm hoping to do some form of exercise, even if it's just a walk around the block.

I should put my lunch hour at work to better use and take a walk...and get to prenatal yoga (I adored it with my first pregnancy).

Thank you all for your input/stories.

  • I did very little physically during my pregnancy - 1st tri the severe nausea and fatigue made even caring for my toddler a huge ordeal, and by the time I got through all of that I was already starting to see signs of edema in my ankles and my OB told me to get horizontal whenever I had the opportunity. I was already hugely overweight prior to the pregnancy and gained a ton (almost all water retention, though, and there wasn't much to be done about that), but I do think resting and limiting strenuous activity helped me carry those babies almost to the end. I can definitely tell that I've lost a lot of strength, though, and once these kiddos are a little older and not nursing all day long and things aren't quite as frantic around the house I need to work on getting my strength back up and shedding some of the excess weight.
