Bilateral hydronephrosis

During my pregnancy, twin B was diagnosed with hydronephesis on one of her kidneys.  It was only 7mm so they felt pretty sure it would go away on it's own after birth.  We did a u/s when she was a month old and not only did it not go away, it got larger and is now on both kidneys.  It is a grade 3 on the right and 2-3 on the left.  We were sent to a specialist who ordered a VCUG (the catheter and dye test to see if there is reflux of urine going back in her kidneys) and the Mag3 renal scan (the iv with dye to check for blockages).  We get them done next week.  If it is reflux, it could still go away on it's own, although he feels she may end up with surgery being that it is on both kidneys and a grade 3.  In that case, he would operate after she turns one.  If it is a blockage he wants to operate now.

Have any other moms on here dealt with this?  What was the outcome?  And how terrible were the tests?  I have been sick just thinking about the testing, especially because I have anxiety attacks over catheters.  They said they could sedate, but I know there is a risk with that and don't want to put her through extra risk, but I don't want her to be in terrible pain either:(

    Our little boy has moderate hydronephrosis grade 2 in one kidney. They diagnosed it in utero. They've been keeping an eye on it via ultrasound, but would only operate much later if it causes uti's. My understanding is that the operation is actually a quite routine outpatient procedure. I hope it doesn't come to that for either of us, but if it does, it isn't supposed to be that complicated.
    ttc since 2/2010 ~
    me (36): Hypothyroid (on Levothroid), low vit. d, borderline/high fsh (day 3: between 7-10) (day 10: 13 during CCCT), AFC: 14
    dh (31): awesome (minus one sample with agglutination)
    Diagnosis:possible DOR and/or unexplained + elevated NK cells + MTHFR (C677T - one copy)

    MAY 2011 - FEB 2012 - 3 injectable IUI's with numerous cancellations due to high TSH levels
    MAY 2012 - onto IVF/ICSI (Antagonist Protocol) on BCP and Folgard (3 week delay - cyst - boooo) 5/21 start stims 5/30 ER 11R 8M 3F 6/2 3DT of 3 6/12 Beta #1 83 | 6/14 Beta #2 196 | 6/21 Beta #3 3818 | 6/28 Beta #4 22,213 | 7/2 1st U/S - 2 on board! 8/24 CVS reveals that we have a boy AND a girl on board!

    Healthy baby boy and girl born in February, 2013 at 38 weeks and 2 days!

    well my dd did have it during the u/s but it resolved itself before birth.  I had a coworker whose dd had it severe and had 2 surgeries, one shortly after birth, and one a year later.  She is now a perfectly healthy 6 year old.

    I know the testing would be hard to go through, but I would strongly recommend doing the sedation.  No reason why the baby should have to suffer in pain, and she will be closely monitored by all the doctors, so the risks should be minimal.  My kids went under sedation for getting tubes put in their ears, and it's scary of course, but they came out of it completely fine with no issues.
