Potty Training

Ugh- Timing!!

I have been watching Ds for signs when he is ready. Began toilet learning (around 2?) with books, potty seat, vocab., etc. Around 2.5 he seemed a bit more interested. Had some success peeing. Once he even told me he gad to go, and pooped. That was after starting mom's day out in an opening in a slightly older class. I tried using rewards of small wrapped prizes since he showed no interest in stickers. This upset him as he wanted the prize as soon as he sat on the potty. He stopped peeing and I backed off. Then he hit the majorly negative phase.

So, now that I am 32 weeks pregnant, he has started to pick up the potty books and wants to read them again. Friday at bedtime he asked to pee on the potty. I couldn't help but wonder if it waa another stall tactic, but lo and behold he went pee! I tried to make it fun, and since he's a boy we had a good laugh about the fart that came out when he peed. He loves fire trucks so I talked about putting out the fire. I even got him a chocolate mint (a rare treat). ... What can I say? I'm easy now that I'm in my 3rd tri and tired. :-) Also, he was all wound up that night. He asked to go a 2nd time, and had success again. He has not asked since then.

Ds will be 3 just before Halloween, and baby brother hopefully won't come before then. I'm still in no rush to pt if it's a bad time, but I hate to hold him back if he's ready to try again.
Also, Ds had largely come out of the negative phase. But now, after some concerns at mother's day out, he is back to being really negative again. :-(

Advice based on timing greatly appreciated.

Re: Ugh- Timing!!

  • DS1 is 2.5 and started showing interest in potty training right around 2. About a month before I was due with DS2, DS1 basically fully potty trained himself for like a week. I always supported him and helped him obviously, but I never bothered to push anything because I figured he would regress as soon as the baby came along. Lo and behold as soon as the baby was here (in July, so just 2.5 then) he wanted to just wear diapers again and not bother going. Honestly I was so busy with the baby and grandparents or Daddy was doing most of the toddler work so no one really had the chance to keep up with potty training then anyway. I was kind of relieved that when I was still healing and nursing all the time he never ran up to me and said he needed to poop! I would say based on my experience that you can be supportive and positive without pushing it on him. He will largely figure it all out on his own anyway and he needs to be ready so don't put too much of it on yourself before the baby comes. Especially since I find changing a diaper is a lot easier than the constant work of potty training!
