Diagnose my boob pain please

DD2 is 3.5 weeks old. Since last weekend, I've been having breast pain 24/7 - before, during, and after nursing and pumping. Both breasts are sore and tender, like someone punched me. No matter what I do, the pain doesn't go away. My first thought is clogged duct but is it possible to have clogs in both breasts that make that entire breast sore? I don't feel any hard lumps and there is no redness. I've tried heating pads and warm showers to massage any possible clogs. No help there. I tried pumping instead of nursing (saves my nipples) but pumping doesn't empty me as well as nursing and I only get like 2 oz after 15 minutes of pumping (every 3 hours). I thought about thrush but my nipples don't really hurt - they are just super sensitive. No flu-like symptoms either, so I don't suspect mastitis. Any ideas what could be causing the pain? (I do have a call in to my LC but I'm looking for BTDT experience in the meantime.)

Re: Diagnose my boob pain please

  • I would say clogged ducts. I had it happen with my first born and the pain sounds like what you described.

But I'm not a medical professional. I would see what the LC says and go from there.

  • I had the same all over boob pain you are describing for awhile. Mine eventually went away and I just attributed it to being engorged and my milk supply evening out to what little one needs. I was pumping at first and was making more milk than little one needed, now that I've been breast feeding more and pumping less, things have evened out and that pain went away. But I'm glad you have a call into your LC just to be sure.
