C-sections

Would you have made the same decision?

Hi ladies

I was diagnosed with SPD today (long story short my pelvis isn't handling the pregnancy well and I'm in a lot of pain.) Im walking like a duck all hunched over 24/7.  I only get relief when I lie down semi-reclined.

My OB called me with the U/S results today confirming SPD. He said many women with SPD go on to have normal vaginal deliveries. However it can cause complications and they don't recommended an epidural (which is what I wanted) because the best position for delivering with SPD is kneeling or squatting. He offered me a csection and said its my decision.

I picked csection because I don't want a vag birth without an epidural and as selfish as it is I want the baby out at 38 weeks to get relief from my day to day torture! So my long winded question is: to the mommies who have had a csection, would you have made the same decision as me?

TIA! I appreciate your thoughts.

Re: Would you have made the same decision?

  • Wwe did an ultrasound to find out at 39 weeks that my daughter was folded in half, butt down.  No option of delivering a baby this way.  Even in an emergency, they cant deliver this way (from what Im told).  So, we tried a version (trying to flip the baby over by pushing on the outside of the belly), which I DO NOT recommend to anyone, ever, and it didn't work.  So, I didn't have the option of which type of birth I was going to have.  With that being said, my whole birth plan was to have my child 100% natural, no epidural.  I hadn't really given it any thought.  When I didn't have the option, I was ok with a C-section.  My insides are totally healthy, and I do have the option of having a vaginal birth if/when we have baby #2.  I am, and always will be, a C-section momma.  My recovery was great, I had no problems with milk or bonding with baby.  The pain was  not unbearable, and I only took ibuprofen after I left the hospital.  I barely have a scar and was recovered enough by 4 months to do a 5k mud obstacle course lol.  (I was in NO WAY in shape before I got pregnant either! lol)  Good luck with your decision!

  • I agree that 38 weeks seems early, as hard as it is, I would request 39. Lots of research backs up waiting that extra week.

As for your decision, shit if I know. I and a CS after hours of pushing with little to no oprogress. but I also was doing it without meds. Looking back, j wouldn't have gone to the hospital as early, but I would have also gotten an epidural after the first hour or so of pushing (I pushed for a total of 4 before the CS).

How manybkids do you want, ultimately? That would weigh into my decision - I am personally not comfortable with the risks associated with 3+ CS. Would you be willing to try VBAC for any subsequent babies? Does SPD occur with every pg if you've had it previously? Just some more things to think about :).

Good luck, and hang in there!

  • My csection was extremely easy. My dr reccomended one bc the baby & his head was measuring large and I am only 5' tall doctor thought it would be better. My recovery was smoothe, I was up walking around the same day, had it done on Saturday morning and was home by Monday afternoon. I was scared to have a c section but looking back it wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be.
  • You have to do what you have to do, however I would never just pick a c-section if I was told I could vaginally deliver..even without the epidural.  The recovery for a c section is a b*tch and praying I have an all natural delivery next time.  Natural deliveries hurt, for sure...however from what I've read and personal stories the recovery is amazing!  No drugged feeling, not tied down to a bed, can walk very soon and the baby isn't drugged either.  I hear the worse part of course is the labor and pushing itself.  Once you get through it... you feel amazing.  Not with a c-section!  Ouch, ouch, ouch!

If you are fearful of complications and it giving you really bad anxiety, pick the c-section, but know it isn't easier than a vaginal delivery.  It is not the "easy way out."

Ask some of that moms on the natural delivery board about how they felt during and after labor...feel it out some.

    Good luck!

  • Oh and if your dr allows it I would def go to 39 weeks.  Unless the medial condition you have is the reason they want the baby at 38?

  • Yes. Yes. Yes. I elected for my c/s. recovery was a breeze. Had it at 38w 2d. Do what is best for YOU. And anyone that has a problem, tell them to go jump in a lake.
  • Hell no. My recovery has been a total nightmare. And 1000000000x no at 38w.

Were you offered any other treatments for your SPD, beyond suffering and then having a CS? Because there are lots of ways to relieve the pain (I had it during second tri).

  • I've had both vaginal birth and c/s experiences and I will go vbac if possible next time. My c/s recovery has been OK, but nowhere near as fast as my vaginal delivery.

As PPs have said, choose a later c/s date if you can. Most OBs won't allow an elective c/s before 39 weeks and chance that your due date is wrong and end up delivering a premie with immature lungs. My c/s was forced at 37wks because of complications (plus the twins' position) and we were lucky...no NICU, no major issues aside from feeding troubles and my milk not coming in till way later than normal.

  • My c-section was a piece of cake. I wasn't tied down. I had my baby with me almost immediately. I was up and walking the same day. Of off pain meds while in the hospital. I have no shame. I had a c-section for a medical reason. Everyone is different though . So take care of yourself and your baby. Good Luck!

  • My c/s recovery was a piece of cake and I would and am doing it again in a heartbeat. I don't blame you for one bit for picking that. I would ask them to push it back as far as possible though.
  • That's a really tough question.

First, I would say that if there's no medical reason for your LO to come out before 39 weeks, then wait it out.

I had to be induced at 38 weeks and some change because of cholestasis and pre-e. After cervidil and 10 hours of pitocin, DS didn't engage, I didnt' dilate, my BP kept going up, and instead of putting me on mag, my doctor and husband (I wasn't with it at the time) made the decision to just do the c-section.

My recovery hasn't been too horrible, but there's no way that I would opt for a c-section again. My incision stung horribly (it still stings, but not as bad. It didn't really hurt so much as it just really, really stung), my feet quadrupled in size which made walking hurt, I can't sleep in our bed with my husband because it's too high and even with a step ladder it hurts too much to get in, and I generally feel...limited. It's frustrating.

That being said, you're not going to know how you're going to handle labor until you get there. You may be fine with the contractions. I would recommend at least giving a vaginal delivery a try, but this is definitely a conversation that you should continue with your doctor.

  • In your case i would choose a c section. But i would wait as long as possible. Like others have said, my doc wont do a 38 week c section unless there is a true medical need. I would hang in as long as possible for the health of the baby.
  • Yes, would do it a third time too!
