Two Under 2

Double Stroller Question

I'm going to have 2 under 2 around the end of March and am trying to decide what to do as far as a double stroller goes... I like to go for walks and LOVE my Baby Jogger City Mini GT single stroller. But the double is side-by-side and for sure won't be easy to maneuver around the mall and things like that. Do I just go for the side-by-side stroller and then use another option for when we go shopping (i.e. one in the stroller and one in a carrier or something)? What are your suggestions?

Re: Double Stroller Question

  • Most often the side by sides are much easier to push.  Especially as your kids get bigger and you are pushing 40+ lbs of kid.  I would get a side by side double for walks for sure.  I think in the long term, the seat size on side by sides makes them last a lot longer too.  I have a BOB Duallie which I adore.

When I am shopping or something I have a Bugaboo Bee with the Englacha Junior X Rider.  It's a ride on board with a seat and its AMAZING.  It also has a "seat belt" so my DD can't get off.  I love it.  Then if DD wants to walk or I am wearing DS in a carrier, I am only pushing a single stroller.  It's a perfect solution for us.   I also have a B-Ready and I rarely choose to take it when I can take the Bee and the X Rider.

  • I have the bOB duallie also and LOVE it.. It is a PITA at the mall simply because most store aisles aren't wide enough, but I've made it work 3 times so far!

  • I'm looking into double strollers right now also. I will have a newborn & a 1.5 year old. I need a stroller with a seat and a car seat attachment. Leaning towards the city select. I like the option of it becoming a single when I only have 1 child with me. I looked at the britax b ready which is similar and less expensive but I really hate that the backseat is lower than the front.

  • My kids are 16 months apart. I would always just have the little one in the carrier and the bigger one in the single stroller. When he got older, we put a stand on the back of the stroller for him to ride on and put the younger child in the stroller. Now he just walks.

However, my sister gave me her double stroller (BOB Duallie Revolution), which I will probably have to use when I am out with my 3u3. I like it so far, but do anticipate it will be restrictive in where we go. Still, the kids love being side by side and having a full view each, and those tandem strollers are really quite tricky to push around ... So I think it comes down to personal preference.

  • I am expecting DD2 next month and DH and I just purchased the Britax B-Agile Double Stroller, side by side. We have the single b-agile, which we used with DD1, and loved it. However,  I'm a little concerned with going down isles and getting in doorways. This stroller is pretty big/wide. I like that its lightweight and seems easy to maneuver. Also, we have the britax b-safe car seat which can only be used with a britax stroller, so in the essence of saving some money and not having to purchase a new car seat, we are sticking with britax.
  • I have a Valco Snap Dual and love it. It is a side by side but it's only 29 inches wide so it fit's through standard doorways and is only 2 inches wider than the City Select. It is so easy to use and it's newborn rated so we started using it almost right away. The basket is amazing and it really opens and closes in 1 step. You can push it one handed too. :) it now has a car seat attachment, but I haven't needed it.

  • I've been looking into double strollers also. I have it narrowed down to the City Select or Britax B Ready. I really like that these can be a single and/or double stroller. I also like that there is a car seat attachment. That was invaluable with my first LO. When your oldest no longer likes to sit in the stroller, there is a glider board attachment. These just seem more versatile to me than a side by side double. Guess it also depends on the ages of your children also.

  • Love my joovey side by side it is the cheaper knock off of the citi mini- I also had the single citi mini before I got prego with my second.. Didn't want to spend 400 on the double so the joovey was cheaper and I'm so happy with it!

  • I have City Select which I'm currently using as a double, which I really like. I've found though, since the baby is at the 6+ month mark he does much better in the bottom position. Then my heavier toddler can sit higher (he can't reach much in stores either if he is facing me) and his weight is one the main frame which makes it a breeze to steer again. I love BOBs though too, we have a single so I don't think you can go wrong with either brand.

  • We just made the jump to get a Phil & Ted's with the double attachment. We have 3 lovely single strollers that we use all the time for our 12 month old, but with the next one coming next month, we were down to the wire. For DD1, we used the Chicco snap and go when out and about for the first 6 months or so. We also use the Mountain Buggy Urban Jungle (very much like the Bob) for our many walks in the neighborhood or hikes. We then have the Chicco Lieway for our umbrella stroller that we currently use when out and about and have always used when flying somewhere.

Anyway, it is impossible for find one double that can do all the things those 3 strollers each did best and not way a ton or be massive.... but I did not want to invest in 3 more strollers, when it feels like we just bought these 3 last year.... So we compromised with all the things we like/need and found the Phil & Ted's is lighter than most doubles, has a rumble seat (so is not massive like a side by side), and has the car seat attachment for the new baby.

That said, we have yet to use it--hopefully it will work well---Sadly, in doubles, we just have to choose our priorities and compromise on the other stuff--e.g. a Bob Duallie is an amazing double, but is pricey, massive, heavy, and does not have an easy to use car seat attachment--those made it a no go for us, although I think it IS one of the best doubles on the market. For us, it sounds like a Phil & Teds will work best.... let's hope it does :)
I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!

  • I'm also in the market for a double.  Up until this thread, I thought I definitely would be getting a vertical stroller but now I'm thinking side-by-side is the way to go...

What about car seat attachments for side by sides?  Do they make those?

Yep they do!  It depends on the brand but most double side by sides have a carseat adapters.  Bumbleride Indie, Valco Snap Dual, City Mini Double all do for sure and I know many many others do as well.

  • We have a City Select and a City Mini Double, and they are both really great strollers.  Both have carseat adapters.  Out of the 2, I would choose the City Mini Double.  It folds super easily, it's not much wider than the City Select, and I find now that my kids are 14 months and 34 months, that the weight is much easier to deal with in a side by side.
I'm not going to be navigating tiny boutiques with that stroller, but I'm not going to do it with the City Select either.  What it saves you in width, it makes it up in being a little bit harder to steer because of it's length (and really...I'm maybe not navigating a tiny boutique with 2u2 anyway.  Who am I fooling? ;))
