Oatmeal Cereal

Yesterday was DD's 4 month Check Up and we had the Starting Solid Foods conversation.  We were told it was Ok to go ahead and introduce oatmeal cereal, once a day for a couple of weeks - see how it goes and then move on to purees.  She also gave us a nice 3-page document on starting solids from cereal to finger foods to help us along the way as to how much, when to give it, what not to give, etc.

Our Ped said the first time should be pretty soupy, 4Tbs Formula (2oz) to 1Tbs Cereal and then play with the measurements after that to whatever she's comfortable with.  So, we did just that...then sat Baby Girl in her Bumbo, put a big bib on her and got ready for her to make the biggest mess ever, or so we thought....

Well, the the first 5 spoonfull's were just that A MESS LOL, but surprisingly after that she started opening her mouth in anticipation of the next spoonful.  As my DH put it: "that is amazing".  You watch them grow from doing basically nothing except eating and pooping and then they lift their head, smile, coo, grab for things, so on and so forth and now...without "teaching" her...she's actually eating oatmeal cereal.  I'm actually excited to go home tonight and give her today's amount because she did so well with it.

A few tricks we read that seemed to work:  have DD with us at the dinner table for a couple of weeks prior to having her try cereal.  This actually seemed to work as we noticed that after a few days she seemed interested in our food, by interested I simply mean she was "chewing" while she looked at us eating.  it really was the cutest thing to watch.  We also fed her about an hour before she was due for her before bed bottle so that she wasn't too hungry (but hungry enough).  This prevented her from getting frustrated with the experience.  Lastly, we placed the spoon as close as possible to the roof of her mouth so that she could react the same as she would with a bottle to swallowing.

Anyway, I hope that this helps those of you who have started or are palnning on starting solids soon :-)

Re: Oatmeal Cereal

  • It is so amazing how much they learn in such a short time! Can't wait to see what they can do in a few more!

  • We tried for the first time last night and it was a mess! It was on him, me, DH, table, floor. I think we will try when it isn't his feeding time because he was so hungry that it was like a shark attacking his pray :-) thanks for the tip to try about an hr before their feeding. I'm curious to see how tonight goes.

  • @stephzrn No problem. The Ped gave us that tip...while I don't have a point of comparison since last night was also her first time, I think it really did help.
