Driving and pumping

DS1 and I BFed for 15 months and I pumped just about everywhere, except in my car while driving. DS2 is now 4 weeks and I need to leave him for a day and due to schedules, know I will need to pump and drive. Any tips? Preferred hands free bra? I'll be driving the secondary highways of New England not the DC beltway at rush hour. The drive is about an hour. TIA.

Re: Driving and pumping

  • I think any hands free bra that's comfortable will work. I always got everything set up before I went out to the car, then just slipped a nursing cover on. Other than that, I didn't do anything special.

  • I did exactly what PP did. Set up before you start driving & then you can just watch the time and turn off the pump when time is up. I used a rumina hands free tank/bra and really liked it. In the winter I kept a cardigan sweater in the car bc other drivers will look at you funny if they see your bare arms in the middle of winter!
  • I originally bought the medela handsfree bra but I would spill and once the bottles started filling up they would not be supported enough so I would have to hold with one hand and drive with the other. I later bought the simple wishes handsfree bra from amazon and it truly allows me to pump and drive. I have an hour commute to and from work every day so I really take advantage of my drive time and pump every day. That bra is a lifesaver!! I don't even use a cover in the mornings. In the afternoon I do cover since I work at a HS and there have been a few times when the bus pulls up next to me on the highway.

  • I recommend trying out the bra before you actually need it!

Same here.  When I got to where I was going I would park in a more secluded part of the lot to unhook the pump and get myself put back together.

I agree with the simple wishes hands free bra.  Awesome.  It's really adjustable which I liked as my breast sized changed in those early months of nursing and now as my rib cage (or the fat around my rib cage) has changed as I've started to loose more of the baby weight!

I like my pump ease bra.
Keep a burp cloth or kitchen towel on your lap. Just in case and for when you unhook.
Also I have had days where I pump to fill the bottles and others where I can't get a let down. It's hit or miss when driving with all the added stress.
    Good luck

  • Another vote for the simple wishes pumping bra.  Also agree with putting a kitchen towel on your lap.  I did that to catch spills and then used it to wipe up when I was done.  One thing I learned while pumping during my commute was that bigger bottles were better.  I originally started with Medela 5 oz bottles but sometimes I would pump 4-5 oz, so the bottle would be kind of full.  I moved up to the 8 oz bottles and that gave me a lot more room to prevent spills.  Good luck!
