Utensils?

Does anyone have a LO using spoons or forks? I have been trying to get ds to use a spoon, but he would much rather shovel the food in with his hands.

Advice?

Re: Utensils?

  • I offer a utensil every meal and don't make a huge deal out of it. I used to teach two year olds and 75% of each new crop would arrive still eating with the pincer grasp. They all learned by winter break. Don't sweat it.

  • Just keep offering it and eat with him as often as possible so he sees you using it too. Like @Baker_Bride said, don't sweat it. He'll get the hang of it :)

  • Similar to BakerBride, I offer a utensil for every meal (at least when she is with me). If I put food on the utensil she usually will put it in her mouth. Otherwise she will hit the utensil against her bowl or tray, I figure she is kind of getting the point.

A friend of mine suggested using pudding as a food to have them get used to using a spoon since the consistency is thicker.  I have not tried it yet.

Yes. I was just going to say toddlers are master imitators so eating with him is the best lesson there is.

  • Amir demands a utensil but doesn't always use it. I think by 2, Nene was using hers regularly but I've noticed boys are on a different learning curve so we'll see. Just keep offering with watching and practice they'll get it.

  • DS is only just now starting to try to use a spoon or fork. About a month ago he wanted to hold one at every meal so I started giving him his own to hold. My mom just reported today that he was eating off the spoon if she put food on it. I've noticed in the last two days that he has tried scooping and stabbing at food. Just keep offering and showing him how to use it, he'll get it some day.
  • I offer a utensil at every meal.  DS knows how to pick it up and hold it.  He can use a spoon for something like yogurt and actually feed himself, although very slowly.  If I put something on a fork, he can do that, too.  But that's about it.  The rest of the time, he uses it play the drums on his tray.

  • W uses a spoon pretty well for yogurt, or mashed potatoes, or something like that, but he doesn't "get" forks yet. He just combs his hair with it or hits his tray.

  • Most of the time if we're eating something that requires a spoon halfway through feeding her she'll grab it and want to feed herself. She's great at getting spoon to her mouth but can't scoop the food that well so I guide her hand to scoop some food then she eats. Other times she'll pincher grasp food, place on spoon, then eat. Go figure. I dont' rush it.

  • I offer utensils at every meal but he usually holds it with one hand and eats with the other.

  • DS loves his spoon but he's not good at using it. He gets the concept but is bad at the execution lol. He's determined though and gets mad if I don't let him feed himself. I give him his spoon and then I use one to sneak in bites as I can.

I haven't even offered a spoon or fork to DD yet.  We're just happy when she eats something!  I'm not sure when DS started using one, to be honest, but it's been at least a year.  He's 2 years 9 months.
This probably falls under the category of things you panic about until it stops. Then, all of a sudden you can't remember why you were worried. I remember wondering how other mothers ever left the house because all Howell wanted to do was nurse. I can hardly remember that now. None of our children will go to college eating like cave people. :)

  • I just leave it on the tray and he plays with it. I've been doing that for about a month and just today, he picked up something with the fork, like he finally figured it out.

  • We started offering both recently. She kind of gets the fork. If I help her the first few bites she can stab the rest herself. Spoons are a different story. The food gets on, and than gets dumped off when she turns it over to put it in her mouth.
