My twins are here! And a question about di/di ID.

My girls are here!  I had a scheduled c-section due to IUGR on July 23 at 36 weeks.  Baby A with the IUGR ended up only being 4 oz less than Baby B.  Vivian was 4lb13oz and Chloe was 5lb1oz. They stayed in NICU for 10 days for feeding issues, but had no problems with breathing or temperature.  They are adorable and their big sister is still working on adjusting:)  I have been pleasantly surprised that I almost feel like the two of them were easier than my singleton.  I don't know if it is because she was colicy and woke up a lot at night or if it is because I am in baby mode now since I have a 20 month old and it made the adjustment easier.  But they have been sleeping a solid stretch from 11-5, then going back to sleep for a few more hours after that, so I feel equipped to handle my crazy days!  There have been nights my teething toddler has woken me up more than the twins!  I really hope I didn't just jinx myself, haha.

I have seen quite a few of you on here had di/di twins that ended up being identical.  My OB said this is impossible, but my MFM said it was possible.  And according to your DNA tests, it is indeed possible.  My twins look so similar except for their head shape, which could obviously be the way they were in utero.  I get asked constantly and I feel stupid that I don't have an answer.  How long did you wait to DNA test?  And which company do you recommend?

TIA!

    Congratulations!

I have no advice on the testing, as I am currently pregnant with my twins.  However, mine are di/di and I was told by my OB they could be identical still.  If so, it would depend upon how early the fertilized egg split.  An early split could result in di/di identical twins.  So, if I have reason to believe mine are identical after birth, I plan on testing!

Gah! Your Ob is dumb :/. Test away! You'll never know till you do. My girls were mo/di so no question but the biggest difference is their head shapes!! And great that they are sleeping. My oldest daughter was 19m when the twins were born. It was a nightmare so good for you!!

I know!  I really want to know how something I have seen from several reputable sources is new information to my OB:/  And I am definitely grateful for the nights because my days with them and my toddler are a challenge, but moreso because of my toddler!  She was 18 months when they were born.  I cried a lot the first month because I felt so guilty for how upset she was at first, but she seems to be feeling better.  My husband is gone 12 hours a day so they keep me busy for sure!

  • They look ID on your siggy pic. If they have the same blood type, I'd test. My IDs also have different head shapes. It's seems to be pretty common.

  • Holy crap, they are freaking adorable!! Hmm, your OB seems questionable to me! I think about 25ish percent of di/di twins are ID, and there's several of us on here. My girls had different head shapes and still do. We tested around four months. Go with ProactiveGenetics dot com. They were $100.

  • Cutie pies!  The statistics I've heard floating around are that 1 in 9 of di/di twins are identical and 30% of identical twins are di/di.  So I'd say that your OB is very very wrong.  The fact that they look very similar and have the same blood type are really good indicators that they are identical, but you may want to wait a few more months before you order up the test.  Good luck, it's gets easier!
  • Hi Sascha!! Oh they are so cute!!! So glad to finally see a picture and happy to hear you are doing so well!
  • Adorable!! And I'd totally test. I would need to know. If my two didnt look completely different, I prob would have already, haha!

  • Your OB like mine is a moron. As you saw in my thread, my two at 10 weeks are in the same sac but I was told Di/Di twins. I ordered the test and have done the swabs, I just have to send it out. It took almost 10 business days to get my test in the mail but mine had to come to Canada. A girl on my mom group got hers in 4-5 days. She got the results fairly fast too. Her's were di/di IDs.

The look ID to me. They are adorable btw :) Get the test.. it's worth it to prove your OB wrong.

  • Beautiful girls! Such great news about the sleeping, hopefully I get that lucky :)

  • We are doing great! I don't know how you do it with a toddler! I feel like I can hardly get anything done with just the twins! I'm getting the hang of it now and am loving being a mommy!
  • They are adorable and def look ID to me.
Sounds like you are handling the adjustment well! Congrats!

  • They are SSOO CUTE! Mine are Di/Di too and will also be testing. My OB said something similar to yours glad Im not the only one with a stupid doctor. I just have this suspicious feeling mine are ID but a few weeks time and we will know once they arrive. Yours look so similar I would almost say that they are. Its just that one question I feel like I will nnneeeddd to know. I don't want to be left always wondering. :)
