can I get another stash review

I keep adding stuff to my registry, as I find out about new brands I want to try/see cute diapers.  I plan on doing all prefolds and covers (minus the two AIO's I got on clearance)

I have (ETA: registered for, I don't *have* anything yet):
Diapers:
OsoCozy BetterFit prefolds - Infant (6-16lbs) - 3 dozen
OsoCozy BetterFit prefolds - premium (14-30lbs) - 3 dozen
(not registering for the toddler size yet)

Covers:
Bummis Super Brite Covers 4-9lbs - 4 covers
Assunta Tiny Diaper - 3 covers
Thirsties DuoWrap Size One - 3 covers
Thirsties DuoWrap Size Two - 3 covers
Flip One Size - 3 covers
Assunta One Size cover - 4 covers

Bought on clearance:
Kushies Ultra Lite AIO 10-22lbs - 2 diapers

I'm hoping to do laundry every other day - do I have enough/too much/too few to achieve that goal?

Is there any other brand (covers) that I should try?  I looked at BumGenius, but they seem to all be pockets...

Re: can I get another stash review

  • Flip covers are made by BumGenius, so that's the cover to go with there if you're looking for BG. Honestly, I think there are better covers out there than Flips, but a lot of people do like them. My favorites are Blueberries. They're similar to Thirsties but with better hook&loop. I've heard good things about Best Bottoms and Sweetpeas, too.

  • 3 dozen should be more than enough for EOD laundry.  It seems like you have plenty of prefolds and covers for diapering for a good long while!

  • great!  Thanks - I'll check out blueberries, best bottoms and sweetpeas too - so far everything I have is snaps except the Bummis (because I figure a newborn won't be tugging at her diaper)

I can see how this is addicting :-p
  • I totally agree with Jane about Blueberries, Sweet Pea, and Best Bottoms.

Just a thought I had, you might want to consider getting a few less of the Infant sized prefolds and adding in a few fitteds.  The basic ones are just a prefold that's been sewn into a diaper shape. Don't get me wrong, I love me some prefolds.  Especially when they start solids and you can just tri-fold in a cover, but I find fitteds to be nice sometimes too.  They are especially helpful when you have a babysitter or you are wrangling a squirmy baby!

fitteds can be used with just covers, right?

After reading the prefold vs AIO thread, I'm considering revamping my stash to be more fitteds or just go straight for the AIO so that I have a better chance at convincing day care to CD (they don't normally CD, so prefolds might be a bad idea).

    so many choices.... 8-}

ETA: OK - I just reduced the prefolds to 18 each, and added in 8 newborn, 8 small, and 8 medium Diaper Rite snapless fitted diapers.  If I'm doing my math right (changing every 2 hrs), I should still have enough of each to do laundry EOD.

And added some blueberry covers (size 1 and 2) - assuming blueberry and swadlebees are the same (same print, same name) - how cute!
  • Yes, fitteds should be used with a cover.  Some of the more absorbent ones can be used coverless during the day if you change often, but they aren't waterproof.

As far as number of changes, to wash EOD I'd aim for 30-36 changes during the NB stage and 18-24 during the one-size stage.  So 18+8+2=28 would get you close to where you need to be for NB stage,  and you'd have plenty in the bigger sizes.

FWIW, we started out CD'ing at DC using an AI2 system that was basically like laying a tri-folded prefold into a cover.  It worked pretty well once we got all the teachers trained.  The only downside was that until G started solids his poo was so runny that we basically needed a new cover every time he was changed, so like 6-8 covers each day a DC.  With fitteds you wouldn't have that problem because the fitteds will hold the poo in better than a tri-folded prefold.

Really, I think you should try your AIOs, prefolds, fitteds and maybe even a pocket during the NB stage and see what you prefer.  When it gets closer to time to start DC take one of each in to DC and show them how they work.  They may have a strong preference or they might tell you they'll use whatever you want them to.  Then you can decide what to buy for your OS/bigger stash.

Thanks - I'm trying to build a decent stash on my registry in case my friends want to buy them.  I'll up the infant prefolds to 2 dozen.

Once I close out the registry, I'll buy probably all the newborn (prefolds, fitteds and cover) - but hold off on bigger-sized stuff until I need it, and maybe have a better idea of what brands/fits I like.  I know I have more on there than I realistically need.

As for DC, they told me that they would need a doctor's note to CD - something I plan on talking to my pedis about when I go interviewing in Oct ;).  So, I don't think they're really CD friendly, but we'll see how it goes.  I don't want to make a huge deal over it, and worst case scenario I CD at home and 'sposie at DC (which means I'd need a lot less of the larger sizes).
