Babies: 3 - 6 Months

XP: hip dysplasia

Anyone have any experience with it? DD was just diagnosed today at 4 months. She is in the pavlik harness 23+ hours a day. I am still a little in shock about it. I know it isn't a huge deal and prognosis for normal development is great, but I really wasn't expecting there to be anything found at this appointment. If anyone has dealt with the logistics of the harness, I would love some advice. I am concerned about trying to keep it clean and best options for clothing for her.

Re: XP: hip dysplasia

  • Out daughter was diagnosed with hip dysphasia the day she was born. She was put in the harness at a week old and had it taken off at 17 weeks old. She is now 19 weeks old. She has to be in it at night from 7 pm to 7 am for six more weeks. It gets chilly where we live at night so we put her either in sleep sacks a size bigger than she was (to make room for the harness) or a long sleeve onsie with leg warmers (super cute haha). It's difficult to keep it clean when they wear it full time so just try and wipe her down underneath the harness daily especially around her legs and feet. She had a lot of dead skin when she got it off. Don't worry she will be fine and this is much better than surgeries later on in life. I have ran into several people's whose children had the same thing and many of them became great athletes. She won't even remember having it on. I hope i helped. Good luck with everything!

  • @hottdoggsp - thanks for the advice. Do leg warmers fit ok under the stirrup/bootie things? I was thinking of ordering some but wasn't sure if it would be too tight.

  • I agree with everything PP said. My son was diagnosed his second day of life, and he was put in the harness on his 4th day. He had to wear it 24/7 for 3 months. Then we started weaning, so he wore it 12 on/12 off for two weeks, and then 6 on, 18 off for two weeks. He has been completely out of the harness now for 9 weeks.  He has his 6th month follow up appointment in a few weeks. At the beginning, it's so hard to see them in it, and it gets kind of annoying when people ask what happened to his legs, etc. Stay strong for your baby. It's hard at first, but it will get better. I wish you and your lo lots of luck!
