IEPs and 504s

edited September 2013 in Special Needs
I have a question. Is there any reason that a school would not want to give a child some kind of plan (IEP/504)??
DS's school is usually good about accommodating kids with or without a plan, although I have never asked why. I don't know if anyone saw my open letter thursday note about the darn crayons, but I had assumed that since we had talked about it, and since the OT had spoken with the teacher, that they were having him write with broken crayons in class. So this morning I sent a bag of broken crayons, very short pencils and very short markers with a nice little note practically apologizing for not realizing sooner that they were not doing this, and asking to please have him use these. I am sure she will do it.
However, I don't want to have to go back and ask them to implement everything we talked about, every time it comes to my attention that they aren't doing what they said they would do. Why won't they just write it all out and give him a darn plan so that we all know what they are really doing in the classroom?? Is it something that is a big mess to get done, or is there a reason why it wouldn't be practical to do? Seems like it would make everything much easier, so why don't they want to do it?

Re: IEPs and 504s

  • Everything Auntie said but a question.  I cannot tell from your Open Letter Thursday and this post (I did not look for previous ones) but is your DS in a private preschool or in a public preschool through the school district?  If it is the latter, then my next question is if your child was evaluated and did he qualify for an IEP or 504.  If it is the former, I don't think they do IEPs and 504s outside of what Auntie explained.

  • Thank you so much for all of the info ladies.
It is a private school. So I get why they would just rather accommodate him without, if they are expensive and time consuming. He was evaluated privately by an OT, SLP and OD/Vision Therapist and he has several dx from each of them. I don't know if he will have to be evaluated by a school district professional to be eligible for a plan or if his standing dx's will serve the same purpose? But as long as they are willing to accommodate him, I'm ok with that. Its when they aren't when they said they would that concerns me. However, I have to say, I sent the broken crayons and short markers on Monday and when I went to school today to help with some homecoming activities, he was using them, so I was happy. I don't want to make a big deal out of crayons, but at the same time I want him learning and gaining skills.
