Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

night time bottle

This is a 2 part question. We have cut out daytime bottles but are continuing with the nighttime bottle for a little while longer. DS takes formula in the bottle, do people continue with the formula in the bottle or do you switch and put milk in it instead?

Also when did you or are you going to stop the nighttime bottle?

Thank you!!

Re: night time bottle

  • We stopped bottles at a year old but my pedi said no formula after one. DD refused formula when she was about 11-1/2 months so that was easy for us. Does he drink wcm during the day? If so, I would definitely stop the formula, unless your pedi told you to give home formula.

  • To "stop bottles", we really just transferred the "bottle feeding" to a real feeding. So instead of a night time bottle before bedtime, we do a snack before bedtime (like yogurt or applesauce), just like we give the older two kids. So instead of 6 bottles, she gets 3 meals and 3 snacks a day (6 feedings still).

  • We stopped all bottles and breastfeeding at a year. He used to nurse to sleep but I stopped that at about 6 months.  He hasn't had a nighttime bottle or nurse since then. He had his last nurse about a half hour before bed when we were still BF.  Right now his last sippy of milk is with dinner, which is about 1-2 hrs before bed.

(I think of "night-time bottle" as the bottle/milk right before bed, so if that's not what you mean, my apologies).

  • I was just asking this question on my birth month boards- I feel like my daughter had so many transitions recently and I had a hard time getting rid of the bottles before bed. She enjoys them so much. I can commiserate, however I don't have an answer. I feel like she is a happy girl and I do what is best- I will pick that fight when I feel she has settle into daycare, being in her own bed, and me being back at work. I think the bedtime bottle is not that big of a deal right now
  • Also: I have a girl in the 90th% so I switched her off formula ASAP- she transitioned out of it very nicely. she 15 months
  • We stopped at 12 months.  We didn't even change to a cup of milk or a snack.  He didn't see to care so it was easy.  He also eats plenty during the day that he doesn't need those extra calories to make it through the night.  We do keep a cup of water in his bed in case he gets thirsty.

  • Thank you for your help! DS took to the milk very easily. He, too, has been taking his bottles cold and so switching to wcm has been very easy.  We are still giving him formula in a night time bottle, or the one right before bed, just until is it gone. We have been giving him a morning bottle too which he inhales! But that will probably be the next to go within a month maybe.

@juliane2004 I think this is a great idea.  I was thinking of just switching to a sippy of wcm at bedtime, but that's still kind of the same thing as a bottle, right?  Can you break this down....how did you do it for your youngest?  Do you do bathtime and then a snack?  And then teeth brushing?

  • Wow.. I was trying to see how I would stop nighttime bottles before bed last night and I come in here and see this. My dd drinks water from a sippy but when I give her milk in a sippy she will not drink it. I hope I find something that will work for us

It is basically the same but maybe I'm selfish because I love that cuddle time in the rocking chair while he drinks his milk (out of a sippy). I'm trying to keep that for as long as I can. At least I brush his teeth afterwards though :)
I totally agree!  I don't want to miss out on the cuddle time!  We brush his teeth afterwards too.  DS still has a morning bottle of wcm, so that will be the next one to go....I'm holding onto both of these.  I'm sure he would be just fine with a sippy of milk!

Now that the youngest is a year (almost 14 months now), we do the same as the other two toddlers. We give a snack at about 7:30/7:45 pm, then teeth right before bedtime at 8:00 pm. When we do baths, it's around 7:00 pm, but it is not every night.

We do not do a sippy or bottle of any liquid right before bed, just the "solid" snack at 7:45 pm.
