Healing from tearing/bruising

Little girl was brn vaginally on Friday but not without some awesome 2nd degree tearing on my perineum and insane bruising. A friend of mine suggested using witch hazel to help with healing, anyone try this? About how long did it take for your whole vag/butt area to heal?

Re: Healing from tearing/bruising

  • I also had a 2nd degree tear the tucks pads are amazing they have witch hazel in them also derma plast spray works wonders too. Given that i was only really sore for about 5 or 6 days and was pretty much back to normal.

  • 3rd and partial 4th degree tears, here. LO is 8 days old and I'm still a little sore, but can finally (today) sit, walk and bend normally. Sneezing and coughing is another story. I have been using Tucks instead of toilet paper until today. Tucks and Dermoplast are a dream come true!

  • Tucks like everyone said, and the dermoplast is nice too. With DD I didn't know about tucks (still awesome with bruising alone) and only used dermoplast. This time I could have skipped the dermoplast and just used tucks. I like tucks that much. And you can leave them in your pad if you want to.

I have two 1 degree tears. It's been a week and 3 days. I'm still sore, but feeling significantly better. I use cotton square pads and put humphrey's organic witch hazel (basically like Tucks pads) on it and dab. I haven't been a fan of the cooling spray. And I want to avoid taking my ibuprofen, so I haven't been.

All my muscles downtown are so sore, my hemorrhoid is no fun, and walking is sometimes difficult depending on how I had been sitting. The stinging while peeing isn't happening anymore, and blood loss has decreased quite a bit. I'm on panty liners now.

Oh, and I had a natural (med-free) vaginal birth. Yay for postpartum fun!!! .... Right. So glad to have u ladies to commiserate with.
  • LO was also born Friday, I have a 2nd degree tear and hemroid. At the hospital I used tucks, dermablast and ice packs every time I went to the bathroom. Since coming home I stopped the ice packs and have eased off with the tucks. Yesterday morning I was still very sore, but magically yesterday evening I felt 100% better. Still use the dermablast regularly. They also gave me this cleansing spray, they don't really want me using soap down there. I love the spray to clean up, I don't feel so gross wearing pads.

  • Same as all pp - tucks (sounds funny, but store them in the fridge!) and dermaplast have been amazing. 2nd degree tears and a tear in my urethra - about a week pp I felt pretty good, 2 weeks later I feel almost back to normal. Worst bleeding was in the hospital, about a week after I was down to a liner.
  • I have a nasty 2nd degree tear that is a wonky "U" shape and is not healing very well. That plus hemorrhoids has made me extremely sore and uncomfortable. I actually went in to see my doctor yesterday and he gave me a prescription for hemorrhoid cream and Percocet. I'm 15 days postpartum so hopefully things will improve soon.

  • I'm on day 6 postpartum. It's a little better now. Doc said it was a small tear but recovery has been harder than the episiotomy with DS. I got the cheap cottony pads instead of Always because I felt like the plastic was chaffing. I wa going ice pads in the hospital. I put several Tucks pads on top of my pad and that helps a lot. Some diaper cream on the edges helps too. The best I think has been Epsom salt baths 3times a day and the peri bottle before and after each time in the bathroom. I can walk better today.

  • 3rd degree tear here and I agree with PPs about the tucks pads and ice packs. Use the peri bottle to rinse and just pat dry after using the bathroom. I'm 2 weeks pp tomorrow and feeling pretty good as long I take it easy. I over did it with walking and bending last Thursday and paid for it for 2 days. Good luck!

  • Yes to the Tucks Pads and Dermablast. I had bad hemorrhoids and tearing so I was in uncomfortable for while. In the hospital the hemorrhoids bothered me more than the tearing, when I got home my vagina started hurting really bad. I think about a week pp was the worst and then it got better. I'm now almost 3 weeks pp and I don't have anymore pain or discomfort. I still use the peri bottle when I go to the bathroom and I'm still nursing hemorrhoids but other than that I'm good! Good luck!
  • I am 1 week and 3days post partum and had an episiotomy because I was going to tear. I have just been using dermoplast and extra strength Tylonal. I feel pretty good today.

  • Have some spiffy 2nd degree episiotomy/tears here too. Its basically healed at 3 weeks pp. I just have 1 or 2 interior stitches left. I used the dermoplast and that was it. The swelling was insane though, after 2 hrs pushing, my lady bits were about 6 times the size the should have been. THAT was bizarre!

  • Nearly 4 weeks pp with 2nd and 1st degree tears. I don't use the spray or peri bottle regularly. Tucks I still use after a bm. My stitches are dissolving and are itchy at times. I still have to use a liner. I'd estimate that I will be back to normal next week at 5 weeks pp.

  • Update on my original post: I'm at 6 days out now and feeling significantly better. Bruising is waaaay better, so sitting isn't impossible anymore. Swelling is also waaaay down. The actual stitches are a bit painful still but I know that will just take time. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a full month before I feel more normal.
