Crying it out

I know I don't post often, so I hope no one gets upset with me.  I think I just need some positive reinforcement.  It's funny to my that I am posting about this, because 2 days ago I commented on someones discussion about how well CIO worked for me.  I am now realizing that I spoke too soon.  We are on day 5 of CIO.  The first night was horrible, which I expected it to be.  The second night he cried for 6 minutes followed by 8 hours of sound sleep.  It worked!  The next night he didn't even cry!  But boy was I in for a rude awakening.  Last night he cried for 9 minutes.  Not too shabby, I thought to myself.  From then on, he woke up about every hour to cry and fuss for about ten minutes at a time.  I fed him at 1:30am and 4:30 am.  I really don't think he was hungry, I just think he wanted to me.  Who the heck am I to say no to that?  I just feel like I have given in and I am not dealing with a child who has figured out how to soothe, but is now regressing.  I KNOW he can put himself to sleep, so why wont he just do it all the time?  Am I an ass for saying that?  I feel like a bad parent.  Before trying CIO, Silas woke up every 45 minutes throughout the night.   I am not exaggerating.  We've tried everything, I'm also not exaggerating about that.  I went so far as to put him in front of the TV because he would just watch for a few minutes and go to bed...don't judge me, as I have already judged myself.  I just don't understand.  Every time we try something new it works for 2 days and then doesn't.  What the hell are we doing wrong?  Is it normal for CIO to work so great, so fast and then stop working a few days later?  He is NOT in pain and is NOT hungry when he cries.  He is so used to me getting him right away.  I really don't know what I'm looking for posting this...maybe I just needed to vent.  I just want my baby to sleep, as does every other mom in the world.  I have the worlds happiest kids  by day, and the most pissed off kid by night.

  • cassied7 i dont think i can ever do the CIO because it would break my heart and i hate the sound of crying. That being said my LO was a horrible sleeper until i placed her on her belly thanks to my moms advice. That was when she was one month old. Ever since then my LO has been a pretty good sleeper with bad nights here and there. Every night i give her her bottle and then put her to sleep on my chest. We cuddle for about 30 minutes then i lay her on her belly. She sleeps for about 7- 8 hours straight. She also uses her pacifier. And i make sure she is not too hot since she sweats alot and that can easily wake her up.

Have you tried to put Silas on his belly?

I am terrified to put him on his belly for the risk of SIDS.

  • Obviously do what you feel is right but I don't necessarily think that one bad night means its not working.  I would try again tonight and see what happens.  My baby also prefers to sleep on her stomach and sleeps longer/sounder when she is on it.  However I did wait until she was able to roll herself over before I started with that.

Thank you for that @BelleBean76.  I have this vision in my head of a baby who never cries at night.  I guess I needed the reminder that he IS a baby and there will be good nights and bad nights.

  • Stupid question perhaps, but are you putting him to bed on a full stomach?  That is the ONLY way that my little guy will sleep -- I rock him to sleep while feeding him a large bottle.  If he hasn't had enough throughout the day, he wakes up.  It is amazing, I could seriously set my watch by it.  If he doesn't get at least 30-35 oz throughout the day, he's awake at 1 AM, with his last feeding at 9 PM.  Clockwork (he goes to bed at 9 PM).

Count yourself lucky it's just at night. Mine doesn't sleep good at night and is a fussy monster during the day who doesn't like to nap!

Valid question.  I nurse him on command during the day, and he gets a 6 ounce bottle after his bath while I rock him.  I am new to the bottle though, so I'm not sure if he is getting enough.  Right now, it is trial and error.

  • My DD can put herself to sleep but I have found that if I don't put her down at the very first sign of her being tired, she will cry for a bit. If i put her down at the first sign, she goes right to sleep and doesn't make a peep. I watch for her to rub her eyes. But even if she doesn't appear tired I put her down by 7:30 and she usually goes easily. Does your baby have sleep cues that you can watch for? Maybe try that and see if you can notice a difference in how much/little he cries.

  • @cassied7 How did LO do last night?  Any luck?

  • I agree with @bellabean76, that one bad night doesn't necessarily mean regression.  I would stick with it if you feel like CIO is right for the two of you.  I wouldn't personally do it, but with the sleeping routine I'm comfortable with, I do it every night (no matter what) to establish a routine with my LO

He skipped his last nap yesterday, so he was awake from 2:30-7.  I made him an 8oz bottle incase he really did need more, but he was soooo tired that he only ate 1oz and fell asleep.  He slept until 10pm and I gave him the rest of the bottle and he slept for 6 hours straight.  When he woke up at 4am, I nursed him and he again went right back to sleep until 6:30.  In my mind it was a success. I think I might need to try to keep him up more during the day.

  • @andertrr I sometimes feel like a superstitious professional athlete...doing everything exactly the same so that we can "continue the winning streak" in the game of sleep;)
