Sodium fluoride drops

At our 6 month appointment, our pedi prescribed my son sodium fluoride drops because our town does not put fluoride in the water. After doing some research, most resources seem to say that it's uneccesary to give fluoride to a child who doesn't even have teeth yet. Also, they seem to agree that ingesting the supplement can actually cause harm to teeth in the future. I filled the prescription but am now a little skeptical as to whether or not I should give it to him. Just curious to hear what others think about giving this supplement. TIA.

  • We are overseas with the US Government. We don't have fluoride here either and the medical unit at the Embassy recommends starting the fluoride at 2 years. I am not sure what I'll do. I've read arguments for both. 6 months seems young to me.

  • I did the research too and DD won't be getting the supplement.  DS#1 didn't get it either.  Just b/c the dr sugguests it doesn't mean you have to use it.

  • This may be a dumb question but why does fluoride in the water matter? My baby is breastfed and getting some solids but no water from the tap or anywhere else. I don't drink tap either (don't trust the local water...). From this standpoint, why prescribe fluoride 'because it's not in the water' when they wouldn't be getting it anyways?
